Claudio Matías Kranevitter ( maˈti.as kɾaneˈβiteɾ ; born May 21, 1993 in San Miguel de Tucumán ) is an Argentine - Italian football player who has been under contract with the Russian first division club Zenit St. Petersburg since the 2018/19 season . The defensive midfielder made his debut for the Argentina national team in August 2015 .

Club career

Starting at River Plate

Kranevitter started playing football at the local CA San Martín de Tucumán , but left the club when he was 12 due to the poverty of his family, who could no longer pay the club fee. In order to be able to help his family at this time, he worked as a caddy for years and was also a good golfer himself . In 2007, at the age of 14, he moved to the capital city club River Plate after he was able to convince in a test training. With the U-20 team he won in 2012, the U-20 Copa Libertadores and on 2 December the same year he made his debut in the first team at 1: 0 home win against Lanus . In this 2012/13 season he was used in 5 league games.

For the 2013/14 season he was finally promoted to the first team by coach Ramón Díaz and has already played in 33 competitive games as a replacement for the aged Cristian Raúl Ledesma . This season he won the Torneo Final with his club . After making his way into the starting line-up in the following season, Kranevitter injured his right foot in autumn 2014. In his absence, River won the Copa Sudamericana in December 2014 and in the transition season 2014 he was only used in six games. On August 6, 2015 they won the Copa Libertadores 2015 with a 3-0 second leg win against Tigres UANL after the first leg ended in a draw. Kranevitter was in action from the start in both games.

On August 30, 2015, the Spanish top club Atlético Madrid confirmed the commitment of Kranevitter, where he signed a five-year contract. The first division paid for the services of defensive midfielder a transfer fee in the amount of 8 million euros, but ran in for the remainder of 2015 from River Plate. In the 2015 season he played 17 league games.

Intermezzo in Spain

He then joined the Atlético team in January 2016. On February 14, 2016, he made his debut in a 1-0 away win against Getafe FC . With his new employer, however, he did not manage to fight his way into the starting lineup for the rest of the 2015/16 season and only made eight league appearances.

For the 2016/17 season he moved to league rivals Sevilla FC on loan . There, too, he could not play long-term in the starting line-up, played 21 league games and returned to his home club after the end of the season.

Present at Zenit St. Petersburg

After coach Diego Simeone was no longer used for Kranevitter, he was sold on August 8, 2017 for a transfer fee of eight million euros to the Russian first division club Zenit St. Petersburg , where he was given a four-year contract. There he met his former teammates at River Plate Sebastián Driussi and Emanuel Mammana . He made his Lvy debut on August 9, 2017 in a 1-1 draw against Ural Yekaterinburg . In his first season 2017/18 he was a regular player and made 33 appearances. In the next 2018/19 season he was pushed out of the starting line-up and had to watch Zenit's championship season mostly from the bench. In the end, he only had six short appearances in the league and nine games in cup competitions.

National team

Kranevitter represented his home country from August 2012 to January 2013 in four games for the Argentina U-20 national team . He also took part in the U-20 South American Championship with this selection .

On August 24, 2015, he was nominated for the first time for the A selection as a replacement for Lucas Biglia as part of the friendly international matches against Bolivia and Mexico . On September 5, he made his debut in a 7-0 victory over the Bolivians and was on the field for the entire game.

In June 2016, he took part with Argentina in the Copa América Centenario 2016 in the United States , where he appeared in three games. In the final defeat against Chile , he came on in the 57th minute for Ángel Di María .
