The Republic Airport (also Airport Farmingdale called) ( IATA : FRG , ICAO : KFRG ) is an airfield in Suffolk County east of US metropolitan New York City .
history
The airfield was designed by Sherman Fairchild in 1927 as a works airfield for the Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing Company , whose first production facility was in East Farmingdale . The final planning draft was presented to the authorities on November 3, 1927, and the airfield opened in spring 1928. The series production of the Fairchild FC-2 and Fairchild 71 types was moved to the new halls on the site at the same time. After Fairchild moved to Maryland in 1931 , Grumman Aircraft Engineering used the factory floor until 1937.
The Republic Aviation Company took over the airfield and manufacturing facilities in 1939 and manufactured several thousand P-47 Thunderbolt on site during World War II . For this purpose, additional workshops were built and the runways were attached and extended. The F-84 Thunderjet and the F-105 Thunderchief were also manufactured in Farmingdale.
The airfield was opened to general aviation in December 1966 . In the 1980s and 1990s, some regional airlines also flew to Farmingdale Airport on scheduled services .
