history
The history of Greater Rochest International Airport began with the construction of a hangar southwest of Rochester in 1927. At the beginning, the airport was called Britton Field . In the following year it was renamed Rochester Municipal Airport and a second hangar was built.
Both civilian and military pilots were trained at the airport during World War II . At times, up to 1,000 pilots were trained at the same time at the flight school of the United States Army Air Corps . On January 1, 1948, Monroe County became the owner and operator of the airport. A short time later, a 5,000- foot or 1,524-meter long runway was built. The existing runway, running in north-south direction, was extended from 2,670 feet or 814 meters to the same length. Most recently, an administration building was erected at the northern end of the airport.
In 1953, a multi-million dollar new passenger terminal with a single gate was built. At the beginning of the 1970s, plans were made to build a joint airport with Buffalo , some 100 kilometers away , but this project was not realized. Instead, the existing airport was expanded after the Airline Deregulation Act came into force in 1978. In the course of this, the first passenger boarding bridge was built.
Since the old terminal was nevertheless reaching its capacity limits due to the increased number of passengers, construction began in 1988 on a new terminal, which was opened in 1991. The old passenger terminal was gradually replaced by the new terminal so that the airport could remain open continuously. In 2005 the terminal was renovated and security controls centralized.
