The Niagara Falls International Airport ( IATA : IAG , ICAO : KIAG ) is an international airport of the Buffalo-Niagara region, in the state of New York, United States. The airport has three active runways that are used for general aviation, military and commercial flights. The longest of the three runways measures 2996 meters.
The airport should not be confused with Buffalo Niagara International Airport, 25 kilometers away .
Location and transport links
Niagara Falls International Airport is nine kilometers east of downtown Niagara Falls and 25 kilometers north of downtown Buffalo . The southern civil-use area is on US Highway 62 and New York State Route 182 . Interstate 190 also runs three to four kilometers west of the airport.
The Niagara Falls International Airport is buses in the public transport involved. The NFTA Metro Route 55 and the Niagara Falls Trolley service the airport regularly.
history
Niagara Falls International Airport was originally built in 1928 and called Niagara Falls Municipal Airport . The first airport terminal was built in 1935 . The aircraft manufacturer Bell Aircraft Corporation later moved to the airport. During the Second World War , the airport was used for military purposes by the United States Army Air Forces . The military part of the airport was later renamed the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Base . In 1959, runway 10L / 28R was extended to 9,000 feet and 2,743 meters, respectively. In 1965 the airport was approved for international flights. In 1970 the city of Niagara Falls sold the civil part of the airport to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority . In 2003, the runway 10L / 28R was extended to its current length, and six years later a new passenger terminal was built.
Airport facilities
The airport currently has three runways. In the terminal with an area of 12,000 m² there are facilities for handling in national and international scheduled air traffic as well as for charter flights.
Airlines and Destinations
Niagara Falls International Airport is only used by the low-cost airlines Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines . Allegiant Air flies to Orlando-Sanford , Punta Gorda , Savannah and St. Petersburg , Spirit Airlines flies to Fort Lauderdale and Myrtle Beach .
