The Republic Aviation Company was an American aircraft manufacturer headquartered in Farmingdale, Long Island , in the state of New York. It was founded by Alexander de Seversky as the Seversky Aircraft Corporation in 1931, but could not operate profitably under his leadership. Seversky was forced to resign in 1939. The company was then reorganized as the Republic Aviation Company.
Before and during World War II, they made the P-47 Thunderbolt . Other important aircraft in the company's history were the F-84 Thunderjet and the F-105 Thunderchief . These types were manufactured in the factory halls at Republic Airport .
The company ceased manufacturing aircraft in 1964 before being bought by Fairchild Hiller in late 1965 .
