Christian Eriksen, best Danish scorer in the qualification

Denmark met in Group E on Armenia , Kazakhstan , Montenegro , Poland and Romania . In the ten encounters that resulted, the Danish team won six, lost two games and played twice. Despite the lowest number of goals conceded in this group, Denmark only finished second behind Poland and had to play in the group runners-up. Here they met Ireland. After a 0-0 home game they were already six minutes behind in the second leg in Dublin , but Andreas Christensen equalized 23 minutes later and then Christian Eriksen turned the game around with three goals. In the final minute, Nicklas Bendtner converted a penalty to make it 5-1 for the Danes. This made them the last European team to qualify for the finals.

A total of 26 players were used, of which only two had only one bet. Three players were used in all twelve games: Christian Eriksen , captain Simon Kjær and Thomas Delaney . William Kvist was used eleven times .

The top scorer was Christian Eriksen with eleven goals, three of them in the last playoff game. He was the third best European scorer in qualification. Thomas Delaney, who scored his first international goal in the 4-0 win against Poland, contributed four goals. Peter Ankersen also scored the first international goal in the qualifying games in a 4-1 win against Kazakhstan, Andreas Christensen in the last playoff game against Ireland and Kasper Dolberg in a 3-1 win against Kazakhstan. A total of nine players scored for Denmark, plus an own goal by a Polish player.

Venues and quarters (blue / italic) of the Danes

For the draw of the qualifying groups on December 1st, the Danes were assigned to pot 3 and could therefore be drawn into a group with defending champions Germany, record world champions Brazil, vice world champions Argentina or host Russia. Denmark meets ex-world champions France , Asian champions Australia and Peru in Group C , which were the last to qualify. Before the World Cup, Denmark played 15 times against France, including twice in the preliminary rounds of the 1998 World Cups (1: 2) and 2002 (2: 0). In addition, both met three times in the EM preliminary rounds (1984/0: 1, 1992/2: 1 and 2000/0: 3). Overall, the record with five wins, one draw and eight defeats is negative, but the goal difference due to the 17: 1 (highest victory of a European team) at the 1908 Olympic Games is positive. Against Australia there were only friendlies with two wins and one loss. The Danes had never played against Peru.

Except in Moscow against the Soviet Union, the Danes had not previously played in any of the preliminary round venues.
