This article covers the Iranian national soccer team at the 2018 World Cup . Iran entered the finals for the fifth time and for the first time for the second time in a row. Iran qualified as the second team for the finals after record world champions Brazil, but dropped out in the group stage.
qualification
The team qualified through the qualification of the Asian Football Association AFC .
Games
Iran continued to rely on Portuguese Carlos Queiroz in qualifying , who has coached the team since 2011. They only had to intervene in the second round and met Guam , India , Oman and Turkmenistan in the group stage . Iran won six of the eight resulting games and played twice. As group winners, Iran qualified for the third round, which again took place as a group stage. Here the Iranians met South Korea , Qatar , Syria , Uzbekistan and the People's Republic of China . Iran did not lose a game in this round either, winning six out of ten games and drawing four times. They did not concede a goal nine times, but did not score a goal in three games themselves. Only in the last game against Syria - Iran had already qualified as the second team for the finals two game days earlier - they conceded two goals and with the draw Syria qualified for the fourth round, in which the team failed to Australia.
A total of 33 players were used in the 18 games, 16 of whom were also in the squad for the 2015 Asian Cup . No player was used in all games. Vahid Amiri had 17 missions , Mehdi Taremi had 16 missions and Sardar Azmoun , Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Ramin Rezaeian were used 14 times each . The top Iranian goalscorers were Sardar Azmoun with 11 and Mehdi Taremi with 8 goals. Overall, 1r Iranians scored at least once in the goal and scored 36 goals.
Andranik Teymourian , who wore the captain's armband in six games, made his 100th international match on October 6, 2016 and Jalal Hosseini on March 24, 2016 in a qualifying match.

Quarter
Team Quartier was the training center for Lokomotiv Bakowka in MICRODISTRICT Bakowka of Odintsovo ( Moscow Oblast ) on the southwestern outskirts of Moscow , where the team could train.

For the draw of the qualifying groups on December 1st, Iran was assigned to Pot 3. In Group B, the team will face European champions Portugal , ex-world champions Spain and Morocco .
The Iranians met Portugal, the home country of their coach, in the preliminary round of the 2006 World Cup and lost 2-0. There was also a defeat in a friendly game. The Iranians have never played against Morocco and Spain. Iran played in Kazan shortly before the group draw and has not yet played in the other two preliminary round venues.
