This article covers the Polish national football team at the 2018 World Cup . Poland is taking part in the finals for the eighth time. Most recently, the Poles took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where, as this time, they were eliminated after the preliminary round.

qualification

The team qualified for the World Cup in Russia through the qualifying matches of the European football association UEFA .

Games

Robert Lewandowski, one of the top three scorers in the qualification

Poland met in Group E on Armenia , Denmark , Kazakhstan , Montenegro and Romania . In the ten resulting games, the Polish team won eight, lost one game and played once. This is the best result of the Polish team since qualifying for the World Cup in groups of six. Despite the high number of goals conceded - as many as before only in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup when the team failed to qualify and more than the second, third and fourth in the group - the Poles were group winners ahead of Denmark, which played in the playoffs The group runners-up against Ireland also qualified for the World Cup finals. The Poles are thus the European World Cup participant with the most goals conceded in qualifying.

In total, national coach Adam Nawałka deployed 26 players, 18 of whom were already in the squad for the 2016 European Championship . Only four players had only one bet. Three players were used in all ten games: Jakub Błaszczykowski , captain Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zieliński . Kamil Glik was forced to take a break after the second yellow card. Two players played their first international match in a qualifying match: Maciej Makuszewski against Denmark on September 1, 2017 and Jan Bednarek against Kazakhstan three days later.

The top scorer was Robert Lewandowski with 16 goals, six of which were from penalties. He scored more than half of the Polish goals, making him the top scorer in Europe in qualifying and, along with Mohammad al-Sahlawi (Saudi Arabia) and Ahmed Khalil (UAE), top scorer of all teams participating in the qualification. Except for the 4-0 draw against Denmark, he scored at least one goal and three times in every game. Kamil Grosicki contributed three goals , all other goalscorers were successful once. The first international goal came in the qualifying matches Rafał Wolski in a 6-1 win against Armenia. A total of nine players scored for Poland, plus an own goal each from an Armenian and a Montenegrin player.

The Poles played all home games in Warsaw.

Group draw

Venues and quarters (blue) of the Poles

For the draw of the qualifying groups on December 1, the Poles, who had climbed to 6th place in the FIFA world rankings in October 2017, were assigned to Pot 1 and could therefore not be placed in a group with defending champions Germany, record world champions Brazil, runner-up world champions Argentina or Host Russia will be drawn. Poland faced Japan , Colombia and Senegal in Group H , the only group without a current or ex-world champion . Poland did not meet any of the three teams in a World Cup tournament before. There were five friendlies against the Colombian senior team with two wins and three losses. In addition, the Poles met at the Olympic Games in 1972, where they won the gold medal in the first group game against the Colombian amateur team and won 5-1. The Poles won against Japan four times in a week in 1981 in friendly matches in Japan, but these are not counted by FIFA as an U-21 team competed. This was followed by two defeats in friendly matches in Hong Kong in 1996 and in Łódź in 2002 . Poland had never played against Senegal.

The Poles had already played against the Soviet Union and Russia in Moscow and Volgograd, but never in Kazan.
