Career

Beginnings and breakthrough at home

Piątek began his career with the clubs Niemczanka Niemcza , Dziewiątka Dzierżoniów and Lechia Dzierżoniów in his hometown. In 2012, at the age of 17, he first appeared in the first team of the latter club and played a total of six games in lower-class leagues. The following year he moved to Zagłębie Lubin . It was only at the end of the 2013/14 season that he made his debut in professional football: On May 18, 2014, he came on for his first appearance in the league match against KS Cracovia .

Zagłębie Lubin rose at the end of the season in the second-rate first division . The club succeeded in direct resurgence, with Piątek taking part in the first place of his team with eight goals. After promotion, he played in 33 league games and scored six goals. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , Piątek played in five league games for Lubin and scored one goal. He then moved to league rivals KS Cracovia . In his first season for the club, he scored eleven goals in 27 games. In the following season , Piątek finally achieved the breakthrough when he met a total of 21 times in 36 league games.

Change to Serie A

Through his achievements, Piątek drew the attention of the Italian first division club CFC Genoa , who signed him for the 2018/19 season . He made his debut on August 11, 2018 in the third round of the Italian Cup against US Lecce in the starting lineup. He scored all the goals of the game in the first half in the 4-0 victory of his team; at the same time he managed a flawless hat trick with his third goal after 18 minutes of play . In the 60th minute he was substituted for Luca Mazzitelli . In the fourth round of the competition Piątek was successful again with two hits; his team had to admit defeat there, however, Virtus Entella on penalties. In the league competition he scored a total of nine goals in his first seven appearances - including at least one in each of these games - and ended the first half of the season with 13 goals from 19 games. He scored 19 goals in 21 competitive games for CFC Genoa.

On January 23, 2019, Piątek moved to league rivals AC Milan . He received a contract that ran until June 30, 2023. In the cup match against SSC Napoli on January 29, Piątek scored both goals in the 2-0 home win of his team and thus his first competitive goal for AC Milan, making his Team reached the semi-finals of the competition in which they failed at Lazio Rome . By the end of the season, Piątek was used in all of his club's games. He scored a total of eleven goals in 21 games and 30 in 42 games across clubs. The AC Milan finished fifth in the league. In the following season Piątek defended his regular place, but could not build on the performance of the previous one. The fluctuating performance of AC Milan, who only finished twelfth in the table after the first half of the season, also spread to Piątek, who only scored six points (five goals, one assist) in 20 games. After signing the 38-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimović at the turn of the year, Piątek also lost his regular place and only made two of five possible appearances in January.

Hertha BSC

At the end of January 2020 he moved to Germany in the Bundesliga for Hertha BSC ; he was "taken on long term". Under the head coach Jürgen Klinsmann and his successor Alexander Nouri , Piątek was a regular straight away. Until the season had to be interrupted in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic , he had played in 6 league games (5 times from the start) and scored one goal. Since Hertha was in the relegation battle at this point, Bruno Labbadia was signed as the new head coach during the almost two-month break . Under Labbadia, the team stabilized and ended the season in a secure midfield. In the first 5 games under Labbadia Piątek was only substituted on behind Vedad Ibišević , where he scored 2 goals as a joker. In the last 4 games of the 2019/20 season, the striker was in the starting line-up alongside or instead of Ibišević and was able to score another goal. In total, he came to 15 Bundesliga appearances (9 times from the start) in which he scored 4 goals.

National team

For Poland's U21s, Piątek was on the field at the 2017 European Championships , the team was eliminated in the group stage.

The striker has been in the A- squad since summer 2018 . With eight wins from ten qualifying games, he and Poland were the first in the group to reach the final round of the 2020 European Championship .
