Santiago Lionel Ascacíbar (born February 25, 1997 in La Plata ) is an Argentine football player . The midfielder is under contract with Hertha BSC in Germany .

Ascacíbar joined the youth of Estudiantes de La Plata in 2006 . At the beginning of 2016, he was inducted into the club's first team. He then made his debut in the Primera División on February 8, 2016 in the game against CA Lanús .

On August 22, 2017, Santiago Ascacíbar switched to VfB Stuttgart, who had been promoted to the Bundesliga , and signed a five-year contract. Ascacíbar extended his contract with VfB on August 9, 2018 for another year until the end of June 2023. With VfB he was relegated to the second Bundesliga at the end of the 2018/19 season .

After 13 first round appearances (1 goal), the Argentine left VfB during the winter break and signed a contract with Bundesliga club Hertha BSC that was valid until 2024 .

National team

At the 2016 Olympic Games , Ascacíbar played the full game distance in all three group games for Argentina's Olympic team. At the beginning of the following year he was named team captain of the Argentine U20 national team. At the South American Championship 2017 , Ascacíbar qualified with Argentina for the U20 World Championship 2017 .

On 8 September 2018 debuted Ascacibar in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the Argentine senior team when he at the 3: 0 win in a friendly against Guatemala came on at halftime.
