Vedad Ibišević was born in Vlasenica in eastern Bosnia, where he also began his school education. With the beginning of the Bosnian War , the Bosniak family of Ibiševićs moved to Tuzla , which is inhabited by Bosniaks , where he began to play football in the local Proleter Slacinovići club . From there he went to the youth team of the then Bosnian first division club Zmaj od Bosne in Tuzla. During this time he also played for the first time for the national junior soccer team of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Ibišević family moved to Switzerland in 2000 due to the poor economic conditions after the Bosnian War, but also to enable their son to develop further in football, which had reached its limits in Bosnia and Herzegovina . There he started training at FC Baden . However, after only ten months, the family moved on to relatives in St. Louis in the United States , as they did not receive a permanent residence permit in Switzerland .
