Szymon Żurkowski (born September 25, 1997 in Tychy ) is a Polish football player who is under contract with the Italian first division club Fiorentina . The midfielder was also a Polish U21 international .

Career

Żurkowski comes from the successful youth academy of the amateur club Gwarek Zabrze , which in the past brought out later national players such as Kamil Kosowski , Marcin Kuźba and Łukasz Piszczek . In the summer of 2016 he then joined the more successful second division club Górnik Zabrze , where he signed a four-year contract. There he initially only played games for the reserve team in the fourth-highest Polish division . On November 13, 2016 (17th matchday) he made his debut in the Fortuna 1st League when he came on as a substitute in the 4-0 home win against Wisła Puławy in the closing stages. At the end of the 2016/17 season he made it onto the team's starting line-up. On May 13, 2017, he met Stomil Olsztyn for the first time in professional football in a 4-2 away win against OKS . With Górnik he rose to the Ekstraklasa this season .

There he kept his regular place in midfield and scored his first goal in the top Polish league on December 3, 2017 (18th matchday) in a 3-2 away win against Wisła Krakow . As a climber, he managed a strong 2017/18 season with his club , which ended third in the table. Żurkowski made a big contribution to this with two goals and seven assists in 34 league games. In the following season 2018/19 he scored three goals in 31 games. The strong pre-season could not be repeated and only ranked 11th.

The Italian first division club Fiorentina signed Żurkowski on January 28, 2019, but loaned it back to Górnik for the remainder of the 2018/19 season. He then joined the viola for Serie A 2019/20 . After playing only two league games for Fiorentina in the 2019/20 season until January 2020 , he was loaned to second division FC Empoli on January 30, 2020 for the remainder of the season .

National team

From September 2017 to June 2019, Żurkowski played 12 games for the Polish U-21 national team , in which he scored two goals. With his home country, he also took part in the 2019 U-21 European Championship in Italy and San Marino , where they failed in the group stage .
