Gaetano Castrovilli (born February 17, 1997 in Minervino Murge ) is an Italian football player who has been under contract with the first division club Fiorentina since January 2017 . The midfielder has been a senior international since November 2019 .

Career

Castrovilli started playing soccer in his hometown Minervino Murge at the local amateur club ASD Minervo. In 2008 he was discovered by AS Bari scouts , in whose junior department he also moved after a trial training session. At the Biancorossi , he played in various junior selections before taking his first steps in the first team in 2015 at the age of 18. On May 22, 2015, he made his debut in the second-highest Italian division in the 0-1 away defeat against Spezia Calcio when he came on in the 78th minute for Marco Calderoni . This mission remained his only one for the first team until September 2016. By mid-January 2017, he played 10 league games for the second division team in which he failed to score.

In mid-January 2017, he and his teammate Giuseppe Scalera switched to AC Florence on loan , which secured a purchase option of two million euros for both players. There Castrovilli first played for the U19 team, where he was able to excel in 14 league games with six goals and nine assists. At the end of the 2017/18 season, the agreed purchase option was drawn.

For the 2017/18 season he moved to the second division promoted US Cremonese in a one-year loan deal . Already in his debut game on September 3, 2017 (2nd matchday) against US Avellino , he scored after being substituted on. Despite this good start, he was initially only a substitute for the Grigiorossi . In the second half of the season he established himself as a regular player and ended the season with one goal and four assists, which he was able to collect in 26 league games.

On July 3, 2018, the lending business was expanded for another year. He retained his status in the starting line-up in the next 2018/19 season . However, it was used more often on the wing . He scored his first goal of the season on matchday 1 in a 1-1 draw against Delfino Pescara . On December 30th (19th matchday) he marked the first double of his professional career in a 4-0 home win against AC Perugia and also assisted another goal in this game. Due to a tear in the outer meniscus , he missed eight league games from February to March 2019. He scored four times in 26 league games this season and prepared as many goals.

After his return to Fiorentina, he was trusted by Vincenzo Montella and started the first league game of the 2019/20 season in the starting line-up. In his first game in Serie A, the 3-4 home defeat against SSC Napoli , he provided an assist. With the viola he established himself as a regular player. He scored his first goal in the top Italian division in the 3-1 away win against AC Milan on September 29, 2019 (6th matchday).

National team

From September 2017 to March 2018, Castrovilli played in six friendly matches for the Italian U20 national team. He scored his only two goals in his international debut on September 5 in a 6-1 win against Poland .

In November 2018 he then played two test matches for the U21s , in which he did not score.

On November 15, 2019, he made his debut in the 3-0 away win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in qualifying for the European Championship 2020 in the senior team , when he came on in the 86th minute for Lorenzo Insigne .
