Milan Badelj (born February 25, 1989 in Zagreb , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian football player .
Career
society
Milan Badelj grew up in Gajnice, a residential area in western Zagreb. He was playing soccer with friends on a concrete pitch near his parents' home. At five he joined NK Ponikve, at 13 he went to NK Zagreb and three years later to Dinamo Zagreb . He made his debut on July 27, 2008 in the highest Croatian league, the 1st HNL . In the summer of 2007 it was awarded to NK Lokomotiva Zagreb . He returned a year later and became a regular player. In 2009 Badelj was honored with the Hope of the Year award as the best young player in the Croatian league . He won four championships and two cup titles with Dinamo Zagreb.
In the summer of 2012, Hamburger SV Badelj signed. He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2015 including an option for an additional year. On August 28, Badelj made his last game for Zagreb in the second leg of the Champions League qualification against NK Maribor . He made his Bundesliga debut on September 1, 2012 (2nd match day) in the 2-0 defeat in the away game against Werder Bremen . On November 27, 2012 (14th matchday) he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 3-1 win at home against FC Schalke 04 with the goal of the final score from a foul penalty in the 90th minute.
After the start of the 2014/15 season , Badelj moved to Fiorentina . After 108 games, he left the club after the 2017/18 season .
Badelj has been active for Lazio since the 2018/19 season . After a season in Rome, Badelj was loaned back to Florence.
National team
Badelj has been a regular part of Croatia's junior squad since 2004. In total, he played 50 games in the ages U16 to U20, but he did not take part in a European Championship or World Championship final. He was featured 14 times for the Croatian U21 team. Among other things, he took part in the qualification for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2011 , where the relegation to Spain failed.
On May 23, 2010 he made his debut for the Croatian senior team against the selection of Wales .
Badelj moved up to the squad for the 2014 World Cup due to an injury to Ivan Močinić .
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Croatian squad and was in the starting eleven in all games. He was one of the players who played all the matches up to the elimination in the round of 16 after extra time over the full playing time.
