Germán Alejo Pezzella (born June 27, 1991 in Bahía Blanca ) is an Argentine football player who plays as a central defender for the Italian club Fiorentina , of which he is the captain.

Career

River Plate

Pezzella joined River Plate in 2005 at the age of 14 , having previously represented Olimpo de Bahía Blanca . He made his debut for the professional team on December 7, 2011 in the Copa Argentina .

On December 10, 2014, Pezzella scored the second goal in the 2-0 victory in the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Atlético Nacional , which meant that his team was able to win an international title again after 17 years.

Real Betis

On July 10, 2015, Pezzella signed a five-year contract with Betis Sevilla , who had recently been promoted to the Primera División , for a transfer fee of 2.3 million euros . He made his debut for the club on August 23rd in a 1-1 draw with Villarreal CF and quickly established himself as a leader.

AC Florence

After a loan from Serie A club Fiorentina in the 2017/18 season, Pezzella signed a contract with the club that will last until the end of the 2021/22 season. The transfer fee was 11 million euros. Before the 2018/19 season , he was appointed the club's new captain.

National team

Pezzella made his debut for the senior team on November 11, 2017 in a friendly against Russia .

In May 2018 Jorge Sampaoli appointed him to the provisional 35-man squad of Argentina for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but was not considered for the 23-man World Cup squad.
