Łukasz "Piszczu" Piszczek [ ˈwukaʃ ˈpiʃtʃɛk ] (born June 3, 1985 in Czechowice-Dziedzice ) is a Polish football player . With 292 games played, the former national player is the Pole with the most Bundesliga games at the end of the 2018/19 season.

Piszczek was born in 1985 in Czechowice-Dziedzice in the Katowice Voivodeship and started playing football at the age of seven at LKS Goczałkowice-Zdrój , where his father was a coach. In 2001 he moved to the youth department of Gwarek Zabrze and in 2003 he became Polish A youth champions with the team.

Piszczek in the Hertha jersey (2009)

At this time, those in charge of Hertha BSC became aware of Piszczek and signed him in 2004. The Berliners initially loaned him to the Polish first division club Zagłębie Lubin for the 2004/05 season , where he developed into a regular player over time. In Lubin, Piszczek was initially used as a striker.

In 2006 he reached the final of the national cup with the team , but lost there with him against Wisła Płock with 2: 3 and 1: 3. He was used in both games. With Lubin, the Pole won the Polish championship in 2007 , the club's second overall. For the 2007/08 season Piszczek then returned to Berlin.

He was used at Hertha both as a striker and on the left wing in midfield . In the 2007/08 season he played twelve games from the start, and was substituted on in twelve more. Piszczek made his debut in the top German division on the first matchday of the season against Eintracht Frankfurt , where he was in the starting line-up. As a result, the Pole was used in changing offensive positions and was able to earn five scorer points, including on matchday 30 when he scored his first Bundesliga goal against Hannover 96 . In the following season he was injured for half a year and came to a total of 13 missions. At the end of the season, Piszczek was used by head coach Lucien Favre several times instead of Marc Stein , who moved to the left, as a right defender . In the 2009/10 season Piszczek belonged to goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobný , captain Arne Friedrich and the Brazilians Cicero and Raffael to the permanent staff of Berlin. While in the Europa League they made it to the second round, curiously enough, they were relegated to the bottom of the table in the domestic league.

Piszczek in Dortmund (2014)

For the 2010/11 season Piszczek left Hertha, who had been relegated to the second division , and moved to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer . Here, through an injury to the regular right-back Patrick Owomoyela, he soon became a fixture in this position and one of the strongest offensive full-backs in the Bundesliga. With Borussia he was German champion in his first season and in 2012 under head coach Jürgen Klopp , followed by two wins in the DFB Cup and the Supercup . In the 2012/13 season, the defender was able to contribute 12 assists and thus set a personal best. With only one defeat, the Pole made it to the final of the Champions League with Dortmund in the spring of 2013, which, however, was won by league rivals Bayern Munich . On March 13, 2018, Piszczek extended his contract with BVB, which originally expired in 2019, for a further year until the end of the 2019/20 season .

In the 0-0 draw against Club Brugge on November 28, 2018, the Pole overtook the previous Dortmund record holder Stefan Reuter (44 appearances) in his 45th appearance in the UEFA Champions League .

In August 2019, the defender won his seventh title with the club when the double winner of the previous season, FC Bayern Munich , was defeated 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . In the 3-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 10 of the 2019/20 season, Piszczek played his 300th Bundesliga game, as did his compatriot and former teammate Robert Lewandowski . After head coach Favre switched to a 3-4-3 system for the second half of the season, Piszczek, who also represented the injured captain Reus on a long-term basis from February 2020, moved back to the purely defensive position of central defender for the first time in three years. Even before the end of the season, the club and the players agreed, contrary to previous plans, on a further extension of his working paper until June 2021. In August 2020, Piszczek announced that the 2020/21 season would be his last as a professional football player.

Piszczek in the national team

On February 3, 2007 Łukasz Piszczek made his debut for the Polish national team against Estonia . A few days before the start of the European Football Championship in 2008, he moved into the squad of the Polish national team in place of Jakub Błaszczykowski , who missed training due to a thigh injury. He came on as a substitute in the first game against Germany , but then dropped out due to an injury.

In the same year he made two more games in the World Cup qualifying, then he dropped out of the squad due to several injuries and was not taken into account again until 2010. He quickly played his way back to the regular team and at the 2012 European Championship in his own country he was the right defender in all three games. In 2013 another protracted injury stopped him. When he returned to the team on March 5, 2014 in the friendly against Scotland, he took on the captain's armband once.

In the successful qualification for the European Football Championship 2016 in France, Piszczek played 7 of the 10 competitive games and was then included in Poland 's EM squad and was part of the first two games against Northern Ireland and Germany. After the team had qualified prematurely for the knockout rounds, he stayed on the bench in the last group game. In the last sixteen and quarter-finals, however, he played again for a full 120 minutes. Poland progressed on penalties against Switzerland, while they were eliminated on penalties against Portugal. The lost quarter-finals were the 50th international match in Piszczek's career.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was part of the Polish squad . He was used in two group games and retired with the team after the group stage. As a consequence, he resigned from the national team in August 2018.

Piszczek played his final game on November 19, 2019 in the 3-2 victory of the Polish national team in the European Championship qualifier against Slovenia.

Involvement in match fixing

In the last game of the 2005/06 season , Lubin needed a draw at Cracovia Krakow to qualify for the UEFA Cup . Therefore, the team had a 0: 0 for around 25,000 euros bought . Four years later, Piszczek reported himself to the public prosecutor in Wroclaw because of his involvement . In June 2011, the District Court in Wroclaw sentenced him to a one-year suspended sentence and a fine of around 25,000 euros .

Style of play

Piszczek is one of the first to be called a "complete" defender. The Pole played almost all of his missions on the right defensive flank, on which he can play as such in addition to his qualities in stopping wingers . As of the end of the 2019/20 season, he was able to prepare 64 goals for his Dortmund team-mates.

Others

In the summer of 2019, his children's and youth football school called BVB-Akademie Lukasz Piszczek was opened in Goczałkowice-Zdrój , where he grew up. It is a cooperation project between his club Borussia Dortmund and his own foundation.
