The striker played for Borussia Dortmund's U17 and the German U16 national team at the age of twelve . Origin, childhood and family

Moukoko grew up in the first ten years of his life with his grandparents in Cameroon's capital Yaoundé in the predominantly Muslim district of Briqueterie and has four siblings. His father (* 1951), who has lived in Hamburg as a German citizen since the 1990s , brought his son to Germany in the summer of 2014. Career

In the club

Record player in youth

Moukoko played for the D-Juniors (U13) of FC St. Pauli from 2014 and later scored 23 goals in 13 games as a striker in the C-Juniors Regional League.

In July 2016 Moukoko moved into the youth academy of Borussia Dortmund . He scored 33 goals in 21 games for the C1 juniors (U15) of BVB in the 2016/17 season and has since been considered an exceptional talent in his age group. In the 2017/18 season , Moukoko was the only 13-year-old to play in the B-Junior Bundesliga for the B1-Juniors (U17) of BVB. In the final of the German B-Junior Championship in Munich on June 17, 2018 against FC Bayern Munich , he scored the goal to make it 3-2. With 40 goals from 28 games, he was the top scorer in the West season of the B-Junior Bundesliga. In the 2018/19 season , Moukoko was again the top scorer of the western season with 46 goals in 25 appearances, beating Donis Avdijaj's record (44 goals) from the 2012/13 season . He reached the final of the championship again with the U17, but where they lost to 1. FC Cologne .

For the 2019/20 season, the striker moved up to the A-Juniors (U19) at the age of 14 and scored 6 goals in a 9-2 win against Wuppertaler SV in his first game in the A-Juniors Bundesliga . On the 20th match day, the attacker overtook Haluk Türkeri with his 34th goal of the season, who had held the previous league record with 33 goals in the 2004/05 season . Moukoko played his first game in the UEFA Youth League on September 17, 2019, becoming the youngest player to appear in this competition. He scored the 1-0 goal against the youth team from Inter Milan on October 23 of the same year, making him the youngest scorer in the Youth League. After the interruption of the Europe-wide game operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the game operations of the junior competitions were not resumed, Moukoko and BVB finished second in the West season. With 34 goals in 20 missions, he was the top scorer of the west season ahead of Sebastian Müller (13; 1. FC Köln). The striker has a training contract with Borussia Dortmund, which is limited to June 30, 2022, as well as an advertising contract running in the millions with the sporting goods manufacturer Nike since 2019.

With 15 in the BVB professional squad

At the beginning of April 2020, the DFL General Assembly approved a request from BVB that a player at the age of 16 could receive a license to play in the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga ; previously this was only possible from the age of 17 if the player belonged to the older age group of the A-youth. Moukoko then moved up to the professional squad under Lucien Favre for the 2020/21 season and is eligible to play from November 20, 2020. He can also be used for three seasons in the U19.

In the national team

Moukoko played for the German U16 national team for the first time in a 3-1 win against Austria on September 11, 2017 . Two days later he scored both goals for Germany in a 2-1 win on his second appearance against the same opponent. At that time he was the youngest player in the U16 national team. To protect Moukoko from too much media attention, BVB and DFB decided in October 2017 not to use him for the time being.

In February 2020, Moukoko was appointed to the U19 for the first time at the age of 15 . The international matches were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Controversies over Moukoko's age

Moukoko, who is known as a child prodigy because of his above-average athletic performance , often has to struggle with age discrimination . The question of whether his age corresponds to the truth is publicly discussed and has been intensively discussed in the German sports press . Moukoko's father repeatedly pointed out the authenticity of his son's birth certificate in numerous interviews . German authorities and many sports journalists who had dealt with Moukoko's date of birth named November 20, 2004 as the actual date of birth. A spokeswoman for the Hamburg North District Office announced in October 2017 that Moukoko's birth had been certified at the Hamburg-Harburg registry office in 2016. Accordingly, the striker was born on November 20, 2004 in Cameroon's capital Yaoundé. A re-certification carried out by the authorities in Germany has the same legal status as an initial certification.
