Youth in Magdeburg and Dortmund

Schmelzer was registered with SV Fortuna Magdeburg from December 1996 to June 2002 and then moved to 1. FC Magdeburg . In 2005, the left winger moved to Borussia Dortmund's A-youth team, where he was eventually converted into a full-back due to a personnel emergency. He came in 45 missions to two goals for BVB in the A-Jugend-Bundesliga of the West season . Two years later he moved up to the squad of the second team in the Regionalliga Nord , for which he had played his first game in the Oberliga Westfalen in 2005.

Professional in Dortmund

After 26 games in the regional league, Schmelzer was appointed to the BVB Bundesliga team by the new BVB coach Jürgen Klopp in summer 2008 . There he made his competitive debut on August 9, 2008 in the DFB Cup at Rot-Weiss Essen (3: 1). The defender played his first Bundesliga game seven days later at Bayer 04 Leverkusen (3-2). In the 2009/10 season he was able to oust Dedê from the left-back position and became a regular player. In February 2011 Schmelzer extended his contract prematurely until June 30, 2014 and became German champions and cup winners with the team . In the 79th Bundesliga game for BVB, he scored his first Bundesliga goal on October 22, 2011 (10th matchday) in a 5-0 home win over 1. FC Köln with the intermittent 2-0 and became the second with BVB in spring 2012 Mal master. The defender scored his first European goal on October 24, 2012 when he scored the 2-1 winner against Real Madrid in the Champions League group game . With the team he reached the final, but where they lost to the league rivals FC Bayern . In the following two years Schmelzer was repeatedly out due to injuries, but kept his regular place and won the DFL Supercup twice in a row with the team .

After Mats Hummels ' move, the defender was the successor to the captain of his team under head coach Thomas Tuchel , Peter Bosz and Peter Stöger from August 2016 to May 2018 and during this period he made 66 competitive appearances in which he scored two goals and five assists. In the meantime, Schmelzer's contract has been extended to June 2021. In the spring of 2017, he won his second cup with Dortmund, when he was the fourth captain of Borussia to receive the cup. After his resignation from the captaincy, Schmelzer was inherited by Marco Reus and, under the new head coach Lucien Favre , lost his regular place to the newcomer Achraf Hakimi after a hip injury . Subsequently, after Hakimi's move to the right, Abdou Diallo , Manuel Akanji and the more offensive Raphaël Guerreiro were preferred to him. This prompted him to search for a club during the summer break, but the longest-serving player by far did not receive approval from BVB.

In the home game against Fortuna Düsseldorf (3: 2) on May 11, 2019, Schmelzer completed his 250th Bundesliga game and won the national Supercup for the third time in August with Dortmund against Bayern Munich. In the further course of the season, the Magdeburg-based man was injured more often and only made eight short appearances. On matchday 29 he was able to score again after almost seven years and prepared another one in parallel. After the season, which Schmelzer again finished with BVB as runner-up, he had to undergo knee surgery.

He played his first competitive game at the European Championships in Sweden under national coach Horst Hrubesch ; in the 4-0 final win over England on June 29, 2009, he was substituted on shortly before the end of the game.

On November 17, 2010 Schmelzer played his first international match . In the friendly against Sweden in Gothenburg (0-0), in which his Dortmund teammates Mats Hummels and Kevin Großkreutz also played, he played on the left side of defense for the full time.

He was not used at the European Football Championship in 2012 . In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , coach Löw Philipp Lahm put on the right defensive side, Schmelzer on the left. After missing the game against the Faroe Islands, Schmelzer played against Austria and Ireland from the start. After a poor performance against Austria he was in the run-up to the next game against Ireland by national coach Joachim Löw with the words “ He didn't play a good game against Austria. But there aren't many alternatives now either, so we'll have to continue working with Marcel Schmelzer for the next two, three, four, five months, ”criticized and declared an emergency solution.

On May 8, 2014, he was nominated for the provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup , but deleted from the final squad on June 2, 2014.
