Marco Reus (born May 31, 1989 in Dortmund ) is a German soccer player . He has been under contract with Borussia Dortmund since 2012 and has been their team captain since 2018. He has been playing for the German national soccer team since 2011 .

childhood and education

Marco Reus grew up in the Dortmund district of Körne and later in Wickede with two older sisters. His father was a fitter , his mother an office clerk . He started playing soccer at the age of four and attended the Max Born Realschule in Asseln , then the secondary school in Wickede. A later training as a retail salesman broke off Reus in favor of his career as a professional footballer. The former Czech soccer player Tomáš Rosický , who was also active for BVB for a long time, is one of his role models.

Club career

Beginnings in Dortmund and Ahlen

Reus moved from the F-youth at the Postsportverein Dortmund at the age of six to the youth department of Borussia Dortmund. There he went through the youth teams of BVB for ten years, but was then sorted out because he was seen as too lank and not physically robust enough, so that in the 2005/06 season in the second B-youth year he became Kevin Großkreutz at that time LR Ahlen (from July 2006 Rot Weiss Ahlen ) changed. In Ahlen he first played in the B-youth (U17) and the A-youth (U19). In the first year, the offensive midfielder met on average in almost every second game (ten goals in 21 games) and was used five times in the U23 of Westphalia in the Oberliga . He scored one goal in each of his first two games. In the following year, he increased his goal rate to twelve goals in 19 A youth games. At the same time Reus was included in the squad of the first team that played in the Regionalliga Nord and got his first appearance on the twelfth match day. After that he was substituted on 14 times in the last half hour, twice he played from the start. He scored a goal on the last day of the match when the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was made perfect with Ahlen .

In the 2008/09 season , Reus made his breakthrough in professional football at the age of 19. On the first day of the 2. Bundesliga he was substituted on at half time. On the fourth match day he was on the starting grid and scored his first professional goal. Then he was able to fight for a regular place and came on 27 missions with four hits. Ahlen ended the season in tenth place in the table.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Marco Reus in the friendly against SV Bergisch Gladbach 09 (2009)

For the 2009/10 season Reus moved to the Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach , where he signed a contract until June 30, 2013. Even in the top German league, he was on the field from the first day of play, initially as a substitute and after a few months in the first team. On August 28, 2009 Reus scored his first Bundesliga goal after a solo run over 54 meters in the game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . Reus only missed one matchday this season, scoring eight goals. During this time he was often compared with the then national player Marko Marin , who moved to Werder Bremen for the 2009/10 season and had many parallels with Reus both externally and athletically. The following year he was Borussia's top scorer with ten goals and also prepared nine more goals. On November 2, 2010, he prematurely extended his contract in Mönchengladbach to June 30, 2015. The team was last in the table for most of the game days. It was only on the penultimate match day that she was able to advance to 16th place under coach Lucien Favre and thus reach the relegation games. After the 1-0 first leg win against second division third VfL Bochum , Reus secured relegation in the second leg with the goal to equalize 1: 1.

The 2011/12 season was more successful for Borussia. In the meantime, Mönchengladbach took over the top of the table and was able to stay in the Champions League ranks for a long time. In the end, Gladbach reached fourth place in the table and thus the Champions League qualification . Reus was an integral part of Lucien Favre's system ; he only missed two Bundesliga games due to a broken toe and scored 18 goals and 11 assists in 32 games. Reus was stylized as the face of the Gladbach boom. For his achievements in the Bundesliga and in the national team, he was initially voted VDV Player of the Season and later Germany's Footballer of the Year .

Already during the winter break there was speculation about a club change. On January 4, 2012, Borussia Mönchengladbach announced that Reus would leave the club at the end of the season. Reus used a release clause that allowed him to get out of his contract early for a transfer fee of 17 million euros, which made him Borussia's record transfer. On the same day, Borussia Dortmund announced the commitment of Reus from the 2012/13 season . He signed a five-year contract until June 30, 2017.

Borussia Dortmund

After moving back to his hometown, Reus scored his first two competitive goals in the first round match for the DFB Cup 2012/13 against regional division FC Oberneuland and in the first league game against Werder Bremen . Under coach Jürgen Klopp , Reus immediately established himself as a regular player and formed a strong offensive duo with Mario Götze . In the Bundesliga , he contributed 14 goals and eleven assists in 32 games to the Dortmund runner-up. On October 3, 2012, he scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League to lead in the group game at Manchester City (1-1). After successes against FC Málaga and Real Madrid , Reus finally reached the final with Dortmund , which BVB lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich .

The 2013/14 season was also successful for Reus. At the beginning of the season, BVB won the DFL Supercup against FC Bayern Munich , which was the first title of his career. In the Bundesliga season, which Borussia again finished as runner-up, he scored 16 goals and 14 assists in 30 games, which made him the top scorer in the league. He scored five goals and assists in each of the UEFA Champions League before they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Real Madrid . In addition, the club reached the DFB Cup final , which was lost to FC Bayern Munich. Reus was later voted VDV Player of the Season for the second time in his career.

Marco Reus (2014)

The year 2014 was marked by various injuries for Reus. After he had been out of the 2014 World Cup in June due to a torn ligament in his right ankle and had missed the DFL Supercup win against FC Bayern, the first half of the 2014/15 season was over for him after matchday 12 at 2: 2 in Dortmund's away game at SC Paderborn 07 due to a foul by Marvin Bakalorz, the same injury was broken again. The season did not go well for the club either, the first half of the season ended on a relegation point, and in the meantime they even fell to the bottom of the table. In this difficult situation and after speculation in the media about a club change, the attacking midfielder extended his contract with BVB until June 30, 2019 on February 10, 2015. Three days later, he scored a 4-2 home win in the league his 50th competitive goal for Dortmund against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . After that, BVB recovered and was at the end of the season after 31 points in the second half of the season in seventh place, which meant the Europa League qualification . Reus contributed with seven goals and five assists in 20 games, but also fell out in the second half of the season due to minor injuries. BVB reached the DFB Cup final again, but lost to VfL Wolfsburg .

The 2015/16 season was more successful for Reus under the new coach Thomas Tuchel . BVB finished the season as the best runner-up in Bundesliga history to date. Reus was able to establish himself as a regular player after initial difficulties, but repeatedly fell out due to injuries. Tuchel still held on to Reus and helped him build on previous performances. In the league, he scored twelve goals in 26 games, and in all competitions he scored 23 goals in 43 games. On May 21, 2016, Reus made it to the DFB Cup final for the third time in a row with BVB. After the defeats against FC Bayern Munich in 2014 and against VfL Wolfsburg in 2015 , he and his teammates suffered another defeat against Munich (3: 4 n.E.). During the extension of the game, Reus complained of pain in his thigh, which later turned out to be an injury to the adductors, which cost him participation in the 2016 European Championship .

Due to this injury, Reus did his first appearance in the 2016/17 season on November 22, 2016. In the 8: 4 home win against Legia Warsaw in the group stage of the Champions League , the highest-scoring encounter in the history of this competition, he drove two hits at. On December 16, 2016, Reus received his first expulsion from the field in a 2-2 draw against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in his 209th Bundesliga game with a yellow-red card . Between March and April 2017, he was out for six weeks due to a ruptured muscle bundle. In another good season for Borussia, which ended in third place in the table, Reus completed 17 Bundesliga games in which he scored seven goals and four assists. With the 2-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the final of the DFB Cup 2016/17 on May 27, 2017, Reus won the first major title of his career with Borussia Dortmund, which he had been denied despite various finals. During that game, he was replaced at halftime because of a later diagnosed partial tear of the cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Reus in the jersey of BVB (2018)

Due to this injury, Reus missed the entire first half of the 2017/18 season as well as the first games of the second half due to the training deficit. He made his comeback after an eight-month injury break on February 10, 2018, the 22nd matchday of the 2017/18 season , in a 2-0 home win against Hamburger SV . Under interim coach Peter Stöger , who had succeeded Peter Bosz , Reus again showed good performances after a long injury. Reus was seen as a decisive factor in the fact that the renewed qualification for the Champions League succeeded after a comparatively weak season; He scored seven goals in eleven Bundesliga games. On March 9, 2018, he renewed his contract until June 30, 2023.

For the 2018/19 season , Reus was appointed team captain by the new head coach Lucien Favre , with whom he had already worked successfully at Borussia Mönchengladbach . After he was previously mostly used on the left wing , he played under the Swiss in his favorite position as a central attacking midfielder. In this role, Reus advanced to become a key player at BVB. In the 3-0 Champions League group game against AS Monaco , Reus scored his 17th goal for BVB in this competition, drawing level with the previous sole record holder Robert Lewandowski . In the 2: 4 defeat in the 178th Revierderby against FC Schalke 04 on matchday 31, Reus was sent off with red for the first time in his career and suspended for two games. Despite Reus' personal season record of 28 scorer points in the Bundesliga (17 goals, eleven assists), Dortmund, which started as autumn champions in the second half of the season, missed the championship, which went to FC Bayern Munich for the seventh time in a row . In the Champions League, where Reus met once in six games, they were eliminated in the round of 16 against Tottenham Hotspur . In the DFB Cup, he scored three goals in three games before losing to Werder Bremen in the round of 16 . In June 2019 Reus was voted VDV Player of the Season for the third time after 2012 and 2014 , and in July 2019, for the second time after 2012, the award for Germany's Footballer of the Year followed.

In August 2019, Reus won his fourth title with BVB by beating FC Bayern Munich 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . By February 2020, the captain had made 26 competitive appearances in which he scored 12 goals and prepared seven more. In addition to his preferred position in attacking midfield, he also acted as a striker at times. At the beginning of February, Reus dropped out due to an unknown muscle injury, the team had reached the end of the cup in the eighth round and in the Champions League in the quarter-finals, in mid-March the game was completely stopped for two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Reus' failure then extended to over four months, at the end of June he was at least able to participate in team training again.

Reus was nominated for two U-21 friendly matches in August 2009 .

Already during his first season in Mönchengladbach, an invitation from Reus to the German national team or even a nomination for the squad for the 2010 World Cup was discussed in public . For the first time he was appointed by national coach Joachim Löw as a prospective player for the preparatory game for the 2010 World Cup against Malta at the Tivoli in Aachen , but had to cancel due to injury. Something similar happened to him during his second international match on August 11, 2010 in Copenhagen against Denmark , in the run-up to the encounter with Uruguay on May 29, 2011 in Sinsheim and the two qualifying games for the 2012 European Championship against Azerbaijan and Austria . On August 10, 2011, he sat on the bench for the first time in the friendly against Brazil in Stuttgart , but was not used. For the games against Austria and Poland in early September 2011, Reus had to pass again because of a pubic bone irritation. On October 7, 2011 he finally made his debut in the DFB-Elf in the European Championship qualification in Istanbul against Turkey , when he was substituted on shortly before the final whistle. He had a 20-minute mission against Belgium four days later. He then had the semi-final against Italy again Lukas Podolski soft. Reus came on at the beginning of the second half when the score was 0-2. The German team finally lost 2-1.

On the first day of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , Reus played from the start in a 3-0 win against Faroe Islands . On the second day of the match he scored the 1-0 goal in a 2-1 win against Austria , but was substituted for Mario Götze at halftime due to an injury. In the 6-1 away win against Ireland on October 12, 2012 in Dublin , Reus scored both goals for a 2-0 lead. On the fourth match day he prepared two goals in a 4: 4 against the Swedish selection . On May 8, 2014, Reus was appointed to the provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup by national coach Joachim Löw . Due to his strong season with BVB, Reus was chosen as the national team's hopes ahead of the World Cup. In the last test match before the World Cup against Armenia (6-1), however, he suffered a partial tear of the left front syndesmosis and a torn ligament on the front of the heel bone and was out of the World Cup, which Germany won without him. Shkodran Mustafi was nominated for him . At the award ceremony after the final against Argentina , winning goal scorer Mario Götze showed the jersey of the injured Marco Reus as a sign of his solidarity.

In the qualifying game for the 2016 European Championship against Scotland on September 7, 2014 in Dortmund (2-1), the first competitive game after the World Cup, Reus sustained another serious injury. Shortly before the end of the game, after a duel with Charlie Mulgrew , he suffered a partial torn ligament in his left ankle and a stretched tarsal ligament . After he was denied participation in the European Championship qualifiers against Poland and Ireland , he also missed the following two internationals, the European Championship qualifier against Gibraltar and the friendly against Spain , because of one in the Bundesliga match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on November 9, 2014 Suffered ligament and tendon strains and bone edema in the left ankle. After this injury interruption, he scored the first goal in the 2-2 in the friendly against Australia on March 25, 2015 and four days later in the 2-0 victory in the European Championship qualifier against Georgia . In September 2015 he had to cancel the European Championship qualifiers against Poland and Scotland because of a broken toe . Reus was part of the team that secured group victory and participation in the Euro 2016 in France with a 2-1 home win against Georgia on October 11, 2015 . For the tournament, Reus was appointed to the provisional squad of the national team on May 17, 2016, but did not make it into the final squad again due to an injury due to a pubic bone inflammation .

Reus before a game against Austria in preparation for the 2018 World Cup

After he had not been considered in the national team for over two years due to injuries, national coach Joachim Löw appointed him to the squad for the 2018 World Cup on June 4 . Two days earlier, he had made his comeback in the 2-1 defeat in the friendly against Austria when he was substituted on for Leroy Sané in the 67th minute . In the last test match before the World Cup against Saudi Arabia in the BayArena in Leverkusen , Timo Werner scored in the 8th minute after being presented by Marco Reus. The game ended with a 2-1 for Germany. Reus made his first appearance in a world championship on June 17, 2018 in the 0-1 opening defeat against Mexico in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow , when he came on for Sami Khedira in the 61st minute. In the 2-1 win in the second group game against Sweden five days later in Sochi , Reus was part of the starting line-up. He scored the equalizer in the 48th minute with a submission from Timo Werner and prepared the second goal in stoppage time by Toni Kroos . In the last group game against South Korea on June 27th in Kazan , Reus played from the start, but the 2-0 defeat meant that the German team was eliminated from the bottom of the table in Group F in the worst result in their World Cup history .

After the disappointing performance in the newly introduced UEFA Nations League , in which Reus played twice in four games, he was subsequently one of the top performers in the national team. In qualifying for Euro 2020 , he prepared the winning goal in the 3-2 away win against the Netherlands by Nico Schulz , scored one in the 2-0 away win against Belarus and two in the 8-0 home win over Estonia . Since the European Championship finals were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Reus was initially denied another tournament participation in the national team's jersey.

Style of play

Reus can be used offensively, but prefers the position of the "ten" as a playmaker . He benefits from his ability to orient himself as well as his strengths in ball control and can cause danger both behind the tips from the depths and over the wings in well-dosed sprints and dribbling. Thanks to his energy-saving style of play, he can still call up his pace in the last third of the game and is often responsible for driving his teammates or for important and decisive goals. As of the end of the 2019/20 season, Reus has contributed 178 competitive goals and 114 assists for its respective clubs.
