backgrounds

referee

At the end of April, the DFB selected Deniz Aytekin from Altenberg as referee for the cup final . The reason given by Lutz Michael Fröhlich , head of the DFB referee commission, was the Bundesliga season in which Aytekin had whistled consistently well. Aytekin whistled in the 2016/17 cup season before the final of both clubs' games. He himself described his schedule for the final in advance as the high point of his career.

Christian Dietz and Eduard Beitinger acted as assistants at Aytekin's side. The fourth official was Benjamin Brand .

Halftime show

On May 22, 2017 it was announced that the German pop singer Helene Fischer would appear in the stadium during the half-time break of the game in front of the main stand with a medley specially created for the occasion from Breathless Through the Night and Heartbeat . She sang on two of her concert tours in the Olympic Stadium. In 2014 football fans could already see them at the Brandenburg Gate at the arrival party of the German national team after they had won the World Cup . Nevertheless, their appearance in the half-time break was criticized, similar to the US Super Bowl , the show around the sport was increasingly brought to the fore. In addition, reference was made to the appearance of the singer Anastacia in the half-time of the 34th matchday of the Bundesliga a week before the cup final on the lawn of the Munich Allianz Arena , which was not well received and organizationally failed. During her performance, Fischer was whistled by the audience at an unusually high volume and throughout the entire period of her performance. ARD almost completely shut down the whistle concert a few seconds after it began and only broadcast the musicians' sound, Sky faded out of the performance in the middle of the broadcast and broadcast advertising.

Attendees

Borussia Dortmund was in the final for the fourth time in a row after 2014, 2015 and 2016. In the previous three years Dortmund lost to Bayern Munich, VfL Wolfsburg and again Bayern Munich. The competition was last won in 2012. Eintracht Frankfurt was back in the final for the first time since 2006 , when it lost to Bayern Munich; the last victory in the Frankfurt Cup came in 1988, 29 years ago.

Others

The 74th final took place for the 33rd time in a row in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. The kick-off was at 8:00 p.m. When this time was introduced as kick-off time in 2006, Frankfurt was also in the cup final. The game was broadcast live in Germany on Erste on free TV and on Sky Sport on pay TV . Both also broadcast it live .

On the day of the final, the women's DFB Cup final took place a few hours earlier in the Rheinenergiestadion in Cologne , as usual . The VfL Wolfsburg won with 2: 1 against the SC Sand .
