Christian Mate Pulisic ([ ˈkɹɪstʃən ˈpulisɪk ]; Croatian Christian Pulišić ; born September 18, 1998 in Hershey , Pennsylvania ) is an American football player . He is under contract with Chelsea . In addition, Pulisic, who also has Croatian citizenship, is an American national player . He is mostly used in attacking midfield or as a winger .

Life

Pulisic's paternal grandfather is Croatian . His father, Mark Pulisic, was also a soccer player and played for the Harrisburg Heat indoor soccer team in the National Professional Soccer League in the 1990s . Since the transfer of an underage player from outside the European Union or the European Economic Area is not permitted and is only possible from the age of 16 within this area, Pulisic accepted Croatian citizenship in addition to his US citizenship before moving to Borussia Dortmund . His cousin Will (* 1998) is also a soccer player and plays in the position of goalkeeper . Together they took part in the 2015 World Cup in Chile with the US U17 team. During his early days as a youth at BVB, his father Mark, who had accompanied 16-year-old Christian to Germany, coached the club's U10 juniors for two years.

Pulisic, whose parents were both professional athletes and later coaches , began his career with the Pennsylvania Classics , a youth football organization based in East Petersburg , Pennsylvania . Before that, he played for a year in England in the youth of the lower-class football club Brackley Town , because his mother was working there at the time.

From early childhood his parents nurtured Pulisic's enthusiasm for football. At the Harrisburg City Islanders he already trained with the professionals. Bill Becher, coach at the time, described Pulisic as adaptable and confident without exuding arrogance.

In July 2014, at the age of 15, he and his father moved to Germany to switch to Borussia Dortmund's youth training center . In February 2015, at the age of 16, he officially moved to BVB. In the meantime he had already taken part in training and was used in friendly matches. At BVB, he first played in the B-Jugend (U17), with whom he became German champions in the 2014/15 season , scoring six goals in eight league games.

In the 2015/16 season he was used in the A youth team (U19). At the end of the season, the team won the German A-Junior Championship of 2016. In the semi-final against TSV 1860 Munich , he scored a goal in the second leg and thus contributed to the final. In the final itself, he was not there because of his participation in the Copa America with the US national team . He played a total of 14 games in all competitions for the A-youth and scored 7 goals.

Borussia Dortmund

For the second half of the 2015/16 season, the midfielder moved up to the professional squad together with Felix Passlack under the new coach Thomas Tuchel . On January 30, 2016, he made his debut in the Bundesliga at the age of 17 years and 134 days when he came on as a 68th minute substitute for Adrián Ramos in a 2-0 home win against FC Ingolstadt 04 on matchday 19 . His commitment made him the eighth-youngest player in the Bundesliga. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on April 17, 2016 (30th matchday) in a 3-0 win at home against Hamburger SV with the goal to make it 1-0 in the 38th minute. This made him the youngest foreign and overall fourth youngest shooter in the Bundesliga. With his second Bundesliga goal to 2-0 in the 3-0 win against VfB Stuttgart on matchday 31, Pulisic became the youngest Bundesliga shooter to date with two goals. In total, he scored two goals in nine Bundesliga appearances during the season. He was also used in the A-youth , with which he became German champion for the second time .

In the 2016/17 season Pulisic made 29 league appearances and scored three of the Westphalia’s 72 goals. In the 6-0 away win at Legia Warsaw in the group stage of the Champions League , he was in the starting line-up and thus for the first time in a European competition. After winning the group before runner-up Real Madrid , however, he was eliminated in the quarter-finals with the team. In May 2017, he won his first professional title when he won the DFB Cup final with Borussia 2-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt . In the 2017/18 season he finally developed into a regular player. He made 32 league appearances under coaches Peter Bosz and Peter Stöger , 27 of them in the starting line-up, in which he was able to prepare six goals. In this mixed season, at the end of which head coach Stöger had to go, Pulisic could not win a title with the BVB professionals.

In the first half of the 2018/19 season , Pulisic was not part of the regular formation under new coach Lucien Favre , after Jadon Sancho ousted him on the right wing and Jacob Bruun Larsen was mostly used on the left wing . In the first half of the season he played all games in the Champions League and the Cup, but only made 11 appearances in the league, including 5 in the starting line-up. Rumors of change were circulating in the media, and Pulisic himself also publicly expressed his wish to "play in the Premier League ". At the beginning of January 2019 , one and a half years before his contract expired, FC Chelsea acquired the transfer rights to Pulisic for 64 million euros, who remained in the Borussia Dortmund squad on loan until the end of the season. By the end of the season he came on 9 more league appearances (4 times in the starting line-up), in which he scored 3 goals.

For the 2019/20 season, Pulisic moved to the English Premier League for Chelsea , who had already acquired his transfer rights in January 2019 for 64 million euros and loaned him to Borussia Dortmund until the end of the season. He became the second most expensive exit in BVB history, one of the most expensive transfers in the Bundesliga and the most expensive US player , behind Ousmane Dembélé , who moved to FC Barcelona in August 2017 for 105 million euros . The reason for this transfer model was that at this point in time, Chelsea FC was threatened with a transfer ban from the 2019 summer transfer period due to illegal transfers of underage players, which, however, did not include loan players who were already signed and was also issued by FIFA at the end of February 2019 . Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, did not want to give up Pulisic during the current season - despite his role as a supplementary player in the first half of the 2018/19 season.

On matchday 10 Pulisic scored 3 goals in a 4-2 away win at Burnley FC . On the 11th and 12th match day he subsequently met once each. In total, the American came in his first Premier League season under head coach Frank Lampard on 25 missions (19 times from the start), in which he scored 9 goals. There were also 2 appearances in the EFL Cup and FA Cup . In the FA Cup final Pulisic scored the opening goal against Arsenal , but the game was still lost 2-1.

Pulisic played for the United States U15 squad from 2012 to 2013 . In this he came to ten missions and scored two goals. From 2013 he was used in the U17 selection , with which he took part in the 2015 U17 World Cup in Chile . There, however, the team retired as the bottom of the group. At the Nike International Friendlies in winter 2013 he made a big impression for the first time and at the subsequent Mercedes Benz Aegean Cup he led the US U17 national team to the title. At the time he was noticed by his technique, his overview, his agility and his explosiveness. For the U17 national team, he played 34 international matches in which he scored 20 goals.

On March 27, 2016, he was nominated for the first time for the senior national team and made his debut on March 29, 2016 in the World Cup qualifier against the selection of Guatemala , when he came on for Graham Zusi in the 81st minute . On May 28, 2016, he scored his first international goal for the USA in his third international match.

National coach Jürgen Klinsmann nominated Pulisic for the US squad for the Copa América Centenario 2016 . In the first group game against the Colombia selection , he was substituted on; the United States lost the game 2-0. In the further course of the tournament he was only used again in the semi-finals against Argentina when he was substituted on in the second half. The game was lost 4-0. In his eighth international match, he was in the US starting XI for the first time and, at 17 years, six months and 13 days, was the youngest US player to date in his starting XI debut.

On December 14, 2017, Pulisic was named Footballer of the Year in the USA .

In a friendly against Italy on November 20, 2018, at the age of 20 years, two months and two days, he led his team to the field as the youngest captain in the history of the US association.
