Career

In the club

Zappacosta started playing football in 1998 in the youth department of ASD GC Sora , the club in his hometown. After ten years he joined the juniors of AC Isola Liri, for which he was active for two and a half years. At the age of 17, Zappacosta made his debut for Isola Liri's first team in the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione and was also used regularly afterwards. He made a total of 14 games for Isola Liri and scored one goal.

On January 1, 2011, Zappacosta moved to Atalanta Bergamo . There he played for half a year in the youth, not in the men's area as with Isola Liri. In the summer of 2011 he was accepted into the professional squad, but awarded directly to AS Avellino 1912 in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione . At the Lupi , Zappacosta was able to prevail immediately and became a regular player straight away. After his good performance, Avellino was able to sign Zappacosta as part of a Comproprietà from Atalanta and acquired half of his transfer rights. In the 2012/13 season, then managed the promotion to the Serie B . In his first second division season, Zappacosta managed to stay up with Avellino.

After three years at Avellino, in which Zappacosta played 83 league games, Atalanta Bergamo signed Zappacosta by reacquiring half of the transfer rights that had been given up two years ago. On August 31, 2014, Zappacosta made his Serie A debut for Atalanta and immediately became a regular in the right-back position for the 2014/15 season . At the end of the season, in which he ran 29 times for the Nerazzurri , he was able to celebrate relegation with Atalanta.

On July 10, 2015, FC Turin announced the commitment of Zappacosta, who left Atalanta Bergamo after one year for 5.5 million euros. At Granata , he is to replace Matteo Darmian , who has moved to Manchester United , as right-back.

In August 2017, Zappacosta joined Chelsea FC .

On August 21, 2019, Zappacosta extended his contract until June 30, 2022 and on the same day switched to AS Roma in a loan deal until the end of January 2020 .

In the national team

Except for the U-21 national team, Zappacosta did not go through any junior selections for Italy. He made his debut for the U-21s on September 5, 2013 in the 3-1 loss to Belgium . With the Azzurrini he qualified for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2015 in the Czech Republic , but Italy was eliminated in the preliminary round. For the U-21 selection, he played 17 games from 2013 to 2015.

In November 2016, Zappacosta was nominated for the first time for the Italian national team by Gian Piero Ventura . He made his debut on November 12 in a 4-0 win over Liechtenstein in World Cup qualification . As a result, Zappacosta was a regular member of the Squadra Azzurra and played a total of 13 games by September 2018. However, it has not been taken into account since then.

Style of play

Zappacosta mainly plays as a right-back , but can also act as a right midfielder due to his running speed and flank runs . He is considered a good flanker and a very offensive defender.
