Jorginho (born  December 20, 1991 in Imbituba ; real name Jorge Luiz Frello Filho ) is a Brazilian - Italian football player who has been playing for Chelsea since July 2018 . The midfielder has been with the Italian national team since 2016 . In 2021 he won the Champions League with Chelsea and became European champion , for which he was voted Europe's Footballer of the Year .

Career

In the club

Jorginho was born in Brazil into a family of Italian descent, the great-great-grandfather Giacomo Frello from Lusiana ( Vicenza province ) emigrated to Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century and moved to Italy alone at the age of 15. There he learned to play football in the youth of Hellas Verona , which he went through until he was accepted into the professional squad. In 2010 he was accepted into this, but immediately awarded to the AC Sambonifacese to collect match practice. In 2011 he returned to Hellas and was then an integral part of the team. In the 2012/13 season he was promoted to Serie A with Hellas . In January 2014, Jorginho moved to league rivals SSC Napoli . In July 2018, Jorginho moved to Chelsea .

At the end of August 2021, Jorginho was voted Europe's Footballer of the Year .

In the national team

Jorginho played his first full international match for Italy on March 24, 2016 . He came on in the 89th minute of the game against Spain . In May, Jorginho came on for his second assignment for the Squadra Azzurra when he was substituted on again against Scotland . In addition, he was in Italy's provisional squad for Euro 2016 , but was not part of the final squad. After a two-year absence, he was nominated again for the play-off games for the 2018 World Cup and has been a permanent part of the Squadra Azzurra ever since . On September 7, 2018, he scored his first goal in the national dress as part of the UEFA Nations League .

At the European Championship in 2021 he was in the Italian squad and played in all seven games. In the semifinals against Spain he converted the decisive penalty for the entry into the final, against England , in which he again had the chance to decide the game on penalties. Despite losing to Jordan Pickford , his team won the penalty shoot-out and became European champions. The midfielder was then elected to the team of the tournament .
