Avalon Ballroom

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Avalon Ballroom is a musical theater based in San Francisco . From April 1966 to November 1968, it was one of the city's hip rock palaces, along with the Fillmore and Winterland .

history

The building at 1268 Sutter Street was built in 1911, a few years after the great San Francisco earthquake . Originally it served as a dance school, then for a long time as an auction house.

In 1966, Chet Helms rented the hall with his Family Dog Productions to hold rock concerts. Bands that played at Avalon included Quicksilver Messenger Service , the Steve Miller Band , Moby Grape , 13th Floor Elevators , the Butterfield Blues Band , Big Brother and the Holding Company with their young singer Janis Joplin, and many more.

The psychedelic concert posters by artists such as Rick Griffin , Stanley Mouse , Alton Kelley , Victor Moscoso and Wes Wilson - also known as "The San Francisco 5" - are now expensive collector's items.

In 1968 Helms lost the license for the Avalon. Another production company held concerts for a short time, then the house was used as a cinema.

In 2002 Steve Shirley, who grew up on Hog Farm as "Morning Spring Rain," rented the Avalon and resumed playing rock concerts. Big Brother and the Holding Company gave their first concert on October 12, 2002.
