Family Dog Productions

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Family Dog Productions was a concert promoter founded and directed by Chet Helms in San Francisco in the late 1960s.

history

Chet Helms began giving rock concerts in San Francisco in the mid-1960s. In early 1966, he teamed up with a hippie commune that organized dance festivals and called itself "Family Dog". Helms founded "Family Dog Productions" and organized concerts with Bill Graham in the Fillmore Auditorium . When the cooperation between the two organizers became problematic, Helm opened the Avalon Ballroom in April 1966 , which became the focus of Family Dog Productions.

To promote their events, Family Dog Productions worked with a group of psychedelic artists who created extraordinary posters for the concerts. Rick Griffin , Stanley Mouse , Alton Kelley , Victor Moscoso and Wes Wilson became known as "The San Francisco 5", and their posters are now expensive collectors' items.

When Helms lost his license for the Avalon in late 1968, he went to Ocean Beach , where he held other Family Dog concerts on the Great Highway until the early 1970s; the place became known as the "Family Dog on the Great Highway". After 1970 he only appeared sporadically as an organizer.
