Imbituba , officially Portuguese Município de Imbituba , is a port city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . A 2010 census showed a population of 40,170 people. According to official estimates, around 44,400 people lived in Imbituba in 2018.
history
The first settlement of the urban area by European settlers took place in 1715. Imbituba was founded by law on January 1st, 1924. On October 6, 1930 Imbituba lost the status of an independent municipality, but received it back on August 5, 1958. From 1949 to 1959 the city was called "Henrique Lage".
Economy and port
Imbituba was a center of whaling until the middle of the 20th century. Today the occurrence of right whales off the coast is used for whale watching . Together with beach holidaymakers and surfers on the famous Praia do Rosa beach , this means that tourism is one of the city's most important economic sectors.
Imbituba has a sea port. Mainly textiles and shoes are shipped from the production centers in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul . In 2008 Imbituba's container terminal was privatized in its management. The largest container terminal in the neighboring port of Santos SBSA was awarded the contract. It is therefore to be expected that container throughput will increase in the next few years.
