Architecture and history

A sugar factory was founded on the site of today's Mettehof in the second half of the 19th century . At the end of the 19th century, the Quedlinburg seed breeding company Heinr. Mette the property and used it for his own purposes. There was a separate rail connection.

At the end of the 20th century there was an industrial architecture described as impressive. In addition to an old office building built around 1870, there was a newer office building with a processing wing as well as two extensions added around 1900 and 1920 respectively. The old office building was a plastered building on a rectangular floor plan with decorations in the style of late classicism . The new office building was designed objectively and functionally. It had an expressionist style gable . The property fence with its original gate systems was also preserved. Inside the buildings, both the supporting structures and the original room layouts were preserved. At the end of the 20th century, the site was entered in the Quedlinburg monument register as the Mette company , which was able to continue its business until 1945. This was followed by use by the Deutsche Saatzucht Gesellschaft , which was then liquidated after 1990. With the sale of the buildings and land to a seed company, the area was actively used until 1995. The buildings were then empty and in need of renovation.

After extensive demolition, new construction and renovation work that took place in 2008, the Mettehof shopping center was opened on the site on October 8, 2009. Around 9 million euros were invested. After a compromise with the monument protection authority, only a large storage facility on the corner of Harzweg and Gernröder Weg remained of the original structure, the renovation of which cost around 350,000 euros and initially remained in its shell condition on its upper floors. The construction of the mall was controversial. In addition to the great loss of listed building stock, the large concentration of inner-city-relevant trade outside the city center and the feared weakening of the city center were criticized.
