Wilfredo "Willy" Daniel Caballero Lazcano (born September 28, 1981 in Santa Elena , Entre Ríos province ) is an Argentine football goalkeeper . He is under contract with the English first division club FC Chelsea and is an Argentine international . Caballero has both Argentinian and Spanish citizenship.
Career
Club career
Caballero was in the professional squad of Boca Juniors between 2001 and 2004 and then moved to Spain for FC Elche . In the winter break of the 2005/06 season he was awarded for six months to the Argentine club Arsenal de Sarandí , for which he came to 13 missions. Caballero played 151 games for FC Elche. In 2011 he moved to Málaga FC for just over a million euros .
For the 2014/15 season Caballero moved to the Premier League for Manchester City . He was given a three-year contract until June 30, 2017.
After his contract with Manchester City expired, Caballero joined Chelsea on a free transfer for the 2017/18 season . There he was the substitute for Thibaut Courtois in his first season and came under the head coach Antonio Conte to 3 league appearances. He also played 6 times in the FA Cup and 4 times in the League Cup . In the 2018/19 season , Caballero was behind new signing Kepa . Under Conte's successor Maurizio Sarri , he was used twice in the league, in the FA Cup and in the League Cup. On the 25th matchday of the 2019/20 season , Caballero, who until then had only played in the national cup competitions behind Kepa, was replaced by the new head coach Frank Lampard , with whom he had played at Manchester City in the 2014/15 season, declared the new number 1 . On Matchday 29, Kepa returned to the Chelsea goal.
National team
Caballero took part with the Argentine U20 national team in the 2001 World Junior Championship in their own country. After he was initially only a substitute goalkeeper behind Germán Lux , he was used from the semi-finals and won the world title with his team.
In 2004 he was in the Argentine squad for the Olympic tournament in Athens, but was not used when his team won the Olympic Games. A year later he was also in the Confederation Cup in the squad, but the gate guarded like at Olympia Lux; therefore he only saw his team reach the finals from the bench. Caballero made his debut on March 23, 2018 in a 2-0 win in a friendly against Italy in the senior national team . He was appointed to the Argentine squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia .
