Charles Patrick "Charlie" Mulgrew (born March 6, 1986 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish football player . The left-back trained at Celtic Glasgow , who can also be used in the offensive as a winger , has been under contract with the Blackburn Rovers since summer 2016 after a two-year "England adventure" and two more seasons with league rivals FC Aberdeen and after six years with Celtic .

Athletic career

Charlie Mulgrew trained with Celtic in his native Glasgow , where he received his first professional contract in July 2002. In order to be slowly introduced to the professional team, the club's management decided to loan to first division rivals Dundee United , where Mulgrew should collect game practice in the remaining games of the 2005/06 season. With a total of 14 competitive appearances and two goals, this short time in Tannadice Park was quite successful and in February 2006 the teenager was named the best young professional of the month. Hopes for a promotion at Celtic were not fulfilled and without having completed a single game for the "Bhoys", he moved to England on 23 August 2006 to join the Wolverhampton Wanderers ; in the transfer he served as an "exchange object", as Celtic received the experienced left defender Lee Naylor in return and paid an additional £ 300,000.

On September 10, 2006 Mulgrew made a successful debut in the 1-0 away win against Leeds United , but had to contend with numerous injuries in the period that followed, which significantly restricted his ability to play. As a result, he also missed a possible debut in the Scottish senior team , to which Mulgrew, who had already proven himself in numerous Scottish youth selections, was meanwhile headed. After his comeback at the club at the beginning of the 2007/08 season, the unlucky injury returned one more time; however, he recovered before the end of the year and earned good grades , especially in the Scottish U-21 selection . In late January 2008, the "Wolves" lent him to the third division Southend United and Mulgrew helped there with that the club play-off matches for promotion to the second-rate Football League Championship reached - but there already in the semifinals at Carlisle United failed .

Mulgrew rejected plans to move to Swindon Town in July 2008; instead, he returned to his Scottish homeland, where he signed a two-year contract with Aberdeen FC . In his second league appearance there, he scored his first goal with a free kick on August 16, 2008, which also gave the club a 1-0 away win at Motherwell FC . Right from the start, Mulgrew was a regular player there and with a total of 34 championship games he had the second-most appearances of an outfield player at the "Dons" behind Scott Severin .

In July 2010, Mulgrew returned to Celtic, whose sporting direction had meanwhile been taken over by Neil Lennon . With Celtic Mulgrew won the Scottish Championship five times , the Cup twice and the League Cup once in the following years . After six years at Celtic, he moved to Blackburn Rovers in August 2016 .

On February 20, 2012 he made his debut in a 1-1 draw in the international match in Slovenia for the Scottish national team.
