Gary Caldwell (born April 12, 1982 in Stirling ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach. He was mostly used as a central defender , but due to his versatility also as a right-back , defensive midfielder and man hit man.

Caldwell began his career at the Celtic Boys Club, the youth division of Celtic Glasgow . At 16, he moved to Newcastle United with his older brother Steven . After he could not recommend himself to the reserve team for higher tasks, he was loaned out to other clubs several times (in the 2001/02 season at FC Darlington and Hibernian Edinburgh , and in the following season at Coventry City and Derby County ). In the summer of 2004 he left Newcastle on a free transfer and signed with the Hibs from Edinburgh, although he was under discussion at his favorite club, Celtic.
In 2006 he finally moved back to the East End of Glasgow to join Celtic. There he played until January 2010. On January 13, 2010, the club announced the move from Caldwell to the English first division club Wigan Athletic . There he signed a contract until the end of the 2013/14 season; It was agreed not to disclose the amount of the transfer fee.
National team
Gary Caldwell made his debut against France in 2002 at the Stade de France under Berti Vogts for Scotland . He had since established himself in the squad, if not as a regular player. By 2013 he had completed 55 international matches in which he scored two goals. Against France, he was able to celebrate one of the greatest moments of his career when he scored the winning goal in qualifying for the European Championship 2008 on October 7, 2006 at Hampden Park in Glasgow against the vice world champions.
