Craig William Burley (born September 24, 1971 in Ayr , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player .

Career

Craig Burley moved up to the senior squad of Chelsea FC from London in 1989 , but only made his debut in April 1991 in the 7-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest . Under coach Glenn Hoddle , the Scot became a regular player and midfield player in the "Blues" , with whom he won the 1997 FA Cup . In 1995 he was nominated for the national team for the first time and was part of the squad at the European Championship the following year .

Chelsea's new head coach Ruud Gullit did not plan with Burley and therefore sold him to the Scottish top club Celtic Glasgow in the summer of 1997 for £ 2.5million . In the Celtic jersey, Burley was in top form and played a key role in winning the 1998 championship. After his debut season, he was voted Scotland's Footballer of the Year . In the same year he went to the World Cup in France , where he and his team were eliminated in the preliminary round and he scored the equalizer in the group game against eventual world champions France. In December 1999 he returned to England for a £ 3 million transfer and signed a four-year deal with Derby County . With the club he had to relegate to the First Division at the end of the 2001/02 season .

Between 2003 and 2004 he ended his career at Dundee FC , Preston North End and Walsall FC . After his playing days, Burley became a sports expert at ESPN and the BBC and works on broadcasts of the Premier League. He is also active as a commentator for the sports channel ESPN.

Trivia

Since January 2015, Burley has had a tattoo of the head of Fernando Torres from Atlético Madrid after he lost the bet that he would not score in the game against city rivals Real Madrid .
