Henrik "Henke" Larsson , MBE (born September 20, 1971 in Helsingborg ) is a former Swedish football player and current coach . In 2005, the Swedish Football Association named him the best Swedish player of the past 50 years with the title "King of Swedish Football History". With 40 goals he is also the record scorer of the UEFA Cup and the Europa League .

Larsson, whose father is from Cape Verde , started his career at the Helsingborg club Högaborgs BK at the age of 17, after which he played for Helsingborgs IF (Sweden). In 1993 he moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Netherlands , for whom he scored 26 goals in 101 games in three years. In 1997 he moved to Scotland to Celtic Glasgow . Here he scored 240 goals, according to other sources 242 goals, 174 of them in the league for Celtic. In 1999 Larsson broke his tibia and fibula and was out for months. In 2001 he won the Golden Shoe as Europe's top scorer with 37 goals in 37 games . For his services to the Celtic Glasgow association, he was awarded the title " Member of the British Empire ". To mark his departure, Celtic organized a friendly against Sevilla FC .

In 2004 he moved to FC Barcelona . There he was often only a substitute and often injured, but nevertheless advanced to one of the crowd's favorites. In December 2005, however, he announced that he did not want to extend his contract in Barcelona and would return to his home town in Helsingborg in the summer of 2006 . Shortly before his departure, he became one of the key players in the Champions League final on May 17, 2006 in Paris : After being substituted on in the 61st minute, he made two assists, which went from 0: 1 for Arsenal to 2: 1 and led to the title win for Barça.

In the summer of 2006 Larsson returned to Sweden , where he signed a contract with his old club Helsingborgs IF. From January to mid-March 2007 he was on loan for Manchester United . On November 1, 2009 he ended his career as an active footballer at Helsingborgs IF, but ran again in June 2013 for his first club Högaborgs BK. The club won the game 4-2. Larsson played with his son Jordan.

With 52 European Cup goals scored, Larsson is one of the ten most successful goal scorers in the European Cup.

The Swedish national team was also able to convince themselves early on of the efficiency of the future superstar's exploitation of chances. He made his debut in the Swedish national team in 1993. Larsson first caused a sensation at the 1994 World Cup . With a goal on penalties in the quarter-finals against Romania and a goal in the game for third place against Bulgaria, the attacker contributed to the excellent third place for the Swedes. Larsson scored eight goals in the qualifying phase for the 2002 World Cup and came with three more goals in the final round to a total of 24 goals in 73 international matches.

After the 2002 World Cup , he initially announced his resignation from the national team. However, a massive campaign by the Swedish media (and allegedly a statement by his son to this effect) resulted in his return in 2004. This was followed by three goals at the 2004 European Championships and five more in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. At his last World Cup finals in Germany, he crowned his successful World Cup record with a goal against England. In the round of 16 against Germany, he also missed a penalty, which Sweden ultimately eliminated with 0-2. After the 2006 World Cup, he again announced his resignation, but was persuaded by Lars Lagerbäck to make a comeback for the 2008 European Championship , where he played through all three games except for a substitution in the 87th minute. On September 6, he made his 100th international match in the World Cup qualifier against Albania. After Freddie Ljungberg's resignation , he became the captain of the Swedish national team. For the Swedish national team he was on October 10, 2009 in the 0-1 defeat in the World Cup qualification in Denmark for the last time on the field.

Career as a coach

Larsson was from the 2010 season coach of the Swedish second division Landskrona BoIS . After a fifth place in the table in the first year, the team slipped into the lower midfield in the 2011 season . In the following season, the team placed sixth in the table. After three seasons, the club and Larsson separated at the end of 2012. To continue his coaching education, he was part of the coaching staff of his youth club Högaborgs BK in the 2013 season .

On December 5, 2013, Larsson took over the coaching post at the first division promoted Falkenbergs FF as the successor to promotion coach Hans Eklund , who had taken over Kalmar FF . He led the team to relegation in the 2014 season, but did not extend his expiring contract.

In mid-November 2014, a few days after the end of the season, his former club Helsingborgs IF signed him as a new manager based on the English model. This engagement ended on November 23, 2016. On June 15, 2019, those responsible for the club announced that Henrik Larsson would take over the coaching position again, from which he resigned at the end of August due to verbal hostility from his own fan camp.

For the 2020/21 season , Larsson became Ronald Koeman's assistant coach at FC Barcelona together with Alfred Schreuder .
