Career

Between 1981 and 1997 he played in a total of 143 international matches for the Swedish national team and was Sweden's record international player until September 10, 2013. Then he was outbid by Anders Svensson , but remained Sweden's record goalkeeper. On June 8, 1995, he beat the European record of Peter Shilton in his 126th game against England . He expanded this to 143 games and held it until February 23, 2000, when he was outbid by Lothar Matthäus . With his 127th game on June 8 or 10, 1995 (depending on whether Hussain Said's games at the 1980, 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games and the qualifying games are included), he became the last European to hold the world record . He stayed that way until May 21, 1996, when he was replaced by Adnan Khamees Al Talyani (UAE). He was the first world record holder in recent history to be replaced while he was still playing.

He took part in the 1990 World Cup , 1992 European Championship and 1994 World Cup. His twin brother Andreas was also a soccer player, but not nearly as successful as his brother. Ravelli was Swedish champion in 1980 and 1981 with Östers IF and in 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995 and 1996 with IFK Göteborg . At the 1994 World Cup, he became a hero when he was able to save two penalties in the quarter-final against Romania. Because of this action, he is still very popular in the country.

After the end of his career, Ravelli continued to work for his old club IFK Göteborg. He is also a very popular guest on TV shows and can often be found as a goalkeeper at charity games.
