Andreas Granqvist (born April 16, 1985 in Helsingborg ) is a Swedish football player . The defensive player, who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2006 , has played in his career outside of his home country in England, the Netherlands, Italy and Russia.

Career

Granqvist started his career at Påarps GIF . In 1997 he moved to the youth department of Helsingborgs IF . In 2004 he made his debut in the Allsvenskan , where he quickly developed into a leading player and became team captain .

On January 23, 2006 Granqvist made his debut in the 0-0 win against Jordan in the shirt of the Swedish national team, after he had already played in 26 games for the Swedish U21 team.

In January 2007 Granqvist moved first on loan to Wigan Athletic in the Premier League . In the summer, although only used once in a cup game, he was firmly committed and signed a two-year contract. After 14 appearances in the Premier League, he returned to Helsingborgs IF on loan to Sweden in the winter to collect match practice by the summer and to recommend himself to the squad of the Swedish national team for the European Championship 2008 . He succeeded because he established himself again as a regular in the Swedish club's starting line-up and played all eleven games of the season until the summer break.

After Granqvist was not used during the European Championship tournament, he moved to FC Groningen a month after the national team left the group stage . In the Dutch Eredivisie he played in a team with his compatriots Fredrik Stenman , Marcus Berg and Petter Andersson . In the 2010/11 season he was team captain of FC Groningen. After 116 competitive games with 24 goals for the Dutch, Granqvist signed a contract with CFC Genoa for the 2011/12 season. Also in Serie A he was a regular player for long stretches, with the club he just kept the class.

With the Swedish national team, he reached the European Championship in 2012 , but the selection failed in the group stage.

In August 2013 Granqvist moved to Russia and joined FK Krasnodar . With a transfer fee of 46 million Swedish kronor , he was one of the most expensive Swedish defensive players to date. In his first season at the club he reached the final of the Russian Cup against FK Rostov . In the penalty shootout , he kicked the first penalty ; although he converted, the game was lost. In the following years he placed with the club among the top five teams and reached the European Cup .

At the same time, he succeeded as a regular on the defensive of the national team. After missing the qualification for the 2014 World Cup , as a regular player and captain he was one of the guarantors for the successful qualification for the European Championship finals in 2016 . As a result, national coach Erik Hamrén nominated him for the European Championship in France in mid-May. In all three group matches against Ireland, Italy and Belgium he was in the starting line-up and played every minute of the game. Then the team dropped out again. He took part in the 2018 World Cup with the national team. There the Swedish team was eliminated in the quarter-finals when the Scandinavians lost 2-0 to England . Andreas Granqvist was used in all of his team's games. After the World Cup he returned to Helsingborgs IF.
