Vimmerby [ ̌vimərby: ] is a village (Swedish tätort ) in the southern Swedish province of Kalmar County and the historic province of Småland . Vimmerby is the capital of the municipality of the same name .
history
The region around Vimmerby, which is considered to be one of the oldest cities in Sweden, without an exact founding year being known, was already settled in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. A large burial ground dates from the Iron Age . The trading town, which was built on a hill in the Stångå valley at the crossroads of important trade routes, experienced a heyday before 1350.
In the Middle Ages , Vimmerby was burned down and devastated several times. In 1192 the city was set on fire for the third time by Danes and in 1454 it was devastated again by Christian I of Denmark . At the beginning of the 15th century Vimmerby had city rights, which Gustav Wasa revoked in 1532. The aim was to move the dealers from Vimmerby to neighboring Kalmar . In 1604, however, Vimmerby was given city rights back. Shortly afterwards, the Danes returned in 1610 and once more devastated the city. In 1683 and 1821 fires raged again in the city. In 1821 two thirds of Vimmerby burned down, including the market square with the town hall, which was rebuilt in 1683. Today's town hall was built in the Biedermeier style in 1824/25 .
economy
The city lives mainly from tourism. In 1856 Åbro Bryggeri was founded, which first brewed beer in the Bavarian style and now produces several types of beer, including a strong beer with 7.3 percent alcohol content. There is also a milk powder factory and small metalworking businesses.
traffic
Vimmerby is at the intersection of Reichsstrasse 23 and 40. The town has a train station on Stångådalsbanan , a railway line between Linköping and Kalmar.
Attractions
Large parts of the development on the main street Storgatan date from around 1700.
In the adventure park Astrid Lindgrens värld ("Astrid Lindgren's World") a miniature version of Vimmerby and the scenes of Lindgren's stories can be seen, including the Mattisburg from " Ronja the robber's daughter ", the Katthulthof from " Michel from Lönneberga ", Bullerbü , the dog rose and the cherry valley from " The Lionheart Brothers " and the Kunterbunt villa from " Pippi Longstocking ".
In the vicinity of the village is the giant boulder and rocking stone Runkesten . The Rumskullaeken , the thickest oak in Europe, is also nearby .
