The Stångån in Linköping

The Stångån is a 185 km long river in northern Småland and southern Östergötland in Sweden .

The river has its source in Lake Möckeln (177 m above sea level ) in the south of the municipality of Kinda in Östergötland and initially flows southeast into Småland. Behind Storebro it bends north and leads past Vimmerby , through the lakes Krön (104 m above sea level) and Juttern (103 m above sea level) back to Östergötland. It then leads through the lakes Åsunden (86 m above sea level), Järnlunden (86 m above sea level), Stora Rängen (85 m above sea level) and Ärlången (57 m above sea level) to the Östgöta plain. There it flows through Linköping and finally flows into Lake Roxen (34 m above sea level), which in turn flows into the Motala stream . The Stångån is after the Svartån the second largest tributary of the Motala stream.

The catchment area of Stångån is 2,440 km². Between the Åsunden and Roxen rivers, Stångån has been upgraded to the Kinda Canal and is navigable.

Historically, Stångån formed the borderline between southern Östergötland's two halves, Västanstång and Östanstång . An important trade route ran here.
