Svartån near Tranås

The Svartån ( Swedish for "black river") is a river in the north of Småland and in the west of Östergötland in Sweden .

The river has its origin near Ormaryd , about 10 km east of Nässjö . From there it flows north to Aneby , where it overcomes the Stalpet waterfall. It continues to flow past Gripenberg and Tranås and flows into Lake Sommen . He leaves this again and continues his course north. It flows through the places Boxholm and Mjölby , takes up the right tributary Lillån and ends its course with its confluence northwest of Linköping in the Roxen .

The estuary is in a bird sanctuary.

Svartån belongs to the river system of the Motala ström . It has a length of 165 km and a catchment area of 3410 km².
