Career
Club years
Bengt Gustavsson came in 1947 from the club in his home town of Gusum to the then top club IFK Norrköping , where he was to replace Gunnar Nordahl, who had switched to AC Milan , in midfield at the end of the era of the Hungarian coach Lajos Czeizler from 1949 . In his first game against AIK he also scored three goals. From 1950 the Austrian Karl Adamek was the club's coach, but he turned him into a defender. Norrköping was national champion in 1948, 1952 and 1956 and also reached the cup final in 1953.
In October 1951 Bengt Gustavsson made his debut in the Swedish national team in a 1: 3 defeat in Copenhagen against Denmark in the last game of the tournament for the Nordic Championship 1948-51 , which Sweden nevertheless finished as a winner. In the following year he took part with Sweden at the Olympic Games in Helsinki and won the bronze medal there after a 6-0 semi-final defeat against the up-and-coming Golden Team of Hungary with a 2-0 win against Germany. In 1953 Bengtsson was awarded the Guldbollen , the "Golden Ball", and was named Swedish Footballer of the Year.
For the season 1956/57 he joined Atalanta in the Italian Serie A . Here he immediately became the defensive support of his team as a libero . In 1958 he went down with Atalanta in Serie B, but immediately rose again under the Austrian Karl Adamek, who also worked here for a year.
1958 Gustavsson was at the side of the other Italian legionnaires Gunnar Nordahl, Nils Liedholm and Gunnar Gren regular player in the national team, which was runner -up in the World Cup in 1958 after a 2: 5 final defeat against Brazil in Stockholm.
After the 1960/61 season Gustavsson returned to Sweden and ended his playing career until 1965 at the then second-rate Åtvidabergs FF . In 1963 he played his last of a total of 57 internationals.
Coach years
From 1964 to 1970 Gustavsson was a coach at Åtvidabergs FF. With promotion to the first division, the Allsvenskan , in 1967 he established the club's golden era and won the cup in 1970 with a 2-0 win in the final against Sandvikens IF from Uppsala . That was the first title in the club's history and the first of four titles that Åtvidabergs FF should win by 1973. Conny Torstensson and Benno Magnusson are among the better-known players that Gustavsson integrated into Åtvidaberg's team.
From 1971 to 1972 Bengt Gustavsson coached the Swedish national youth team at short notice. In later years he coached Östers IF from 1973 to 1974, from 1975 to 1978 and 1985 as assistant trainer IFK Norrköping. From 1979 to 1981 he was the coach of Hammarby IF and from 1982 to 1983 at the second division IK Sleipner , which was relegated to the third division in 1983.
