Ernst Orvar Bergmark (born November 16, 1930 in Bureå , † May 10, 2004 in Örebro ) was a Swedish football player , coach and bandy player . The long-time coach of the Swedish national football team was one of the first to be inducted into the SFS Hall Of Fame in 2003.

Soccer

Player career

Bergmark started playing football at Byske IF . At the age of 17 he moved to Örebro with his family in 1947, so that he switched to the youth department at Örebro SK . In 1948 he drew attention to himself with 26 goals in 16 games. Therefore, he made his debut in 1949 at the age of 19 for the team in a game against IFK Göteborg in the Allsvenskan - the last game in Swedish football for Gunnar Gren , who was moving to Italy . At the end of the season he was relegated with the club, but managed with the team the direct return to the Swedish elite series. In the beginning he was still in the center forward position , but now he has been retrained as a defender . As a defensive player, he drew attention to Rudolf Kock , the head of the Swedish national team's selection committee. On June 17, 1951, he made his debut as a substitute for Hans Malmström in the 0-0 draw against the Spanish national team in the national jersey. He then stayed in the defense of the national team, although he relegated again from the Allsvenskan with his club in the 1952/53 season after midfield positions in previous years.

Bergmark missed the promotion with Örebro SK. In order to continue to play for the national team, he decided to change clubs. The first division AIK from Solna was the new club from April 1955 . When multiple national champion, he signed a two-year contract and joined parallel in Stockholm trained as a pastry chef at. By autumn of the year he played 17 first division games before he returned to the second division for ÖSK due to the lack of cohesion in the team. As a result, there were disputes between Bergmark and AIK about the 15,000 kroner that the club had paid the player, and ultimately it was agreed that Bergmark could keep half.

As a result, Bergmark briefly lost his place in the national team, but in September 1956 he was nominated again for the international match against Norway . Although he did not manage to return to the top class with his club in the following seasons, he established himself as a regular in the national team. As a result, he was also part of the squad at the 1958 World Cup . With the team he reached the final against Brazil , in which he was next to Reino Börjesson , Gunnar Gren and Agne Simonsson as one of four second division players after a 2-5 defeat, vice world champion. In the same year he received the Guldbollen donated by the Svenska Fotbollförbundet and the newspaper Aftonbladet for the Swedish football player of the year because of his commitment to the ÖSK and the national team . He also took 19th place in the France Football poll for Europe's Footballer of the Year .

In 1959, Bergmark also took over as coach at Örebro Sok. Under his leadership, the club returned to the Allsvenskan at the end of the second division season in 1960 after successful promotion games against IFK Kristianstad and IFK Luleå . After a fourth place in the table in the following year, he followed the call from southern Europe in the summer of 1962. At the age of 31 he became a professional soccer player in Italy. By moving to AS Roma , his national team career ended at the same time after his 94th international match on June 21, 1962 in a 2-0 victory over Norway in the European Cup . Two seasons, he ran for the club from the Italian capital in the Serie A on. He then returned to Örebro SK and ended here in 1965 after 290 games, including 147 first division games, his active career for the club.

Coaching career

In 1966 Bergmark took over the post of full-time coach of the national team from Lennart Nyman . After the Blågult could only watch after silver in 1958 at the two following tournaments, he led the national team to the 1970 World Cup . There, however, the team failed in the group stage as third in the table, tied with Uruguay only because of the poorer goal difference. After the tournament he resigned, Georg Ericson was his successor.

In 1971 he returned to the coaching bench of Örebro SK and looked after the club until 1973. After an intermezzo at the lower class Fjugesta IF , he returned to Örebro SK in 1978 to succeed Benny Lennartsson - ultimately unsuccessfully - relegating to the second class to prevent. Because of his longstanding activities for the club, he was nicknamed "Mister Sportklubben".

Bandy

At his hometown club Örebro SK Bergmark was active in the bandy team during the winter breaks of the football season. In 1955, 1957 and 1958 he became Swedish champion. He also played 20 international matches.
