history
The area of today's Bureå was already inhabited in the Bronze and Iron Ages ; there are a number of archaeological sites. The place name appears for the first time in 1507 in the form Bwre , derived from the earlier name of the river Bureälven, Bura . There was possibly a monastery on the monastery hill (Klosterholmen) in the 15th and 16th centuries .
The first water-powered sawmills on the Bureälven were built in 1796 and 1797. The wood processing industry determined the local economy for the next two centuries. In 1914 Bureå became an independent municipality, which existed until it was joined to the municipality of Skellefteå in 1967. In 1972 Mo och Domsjö AB (today Holmen AB ) shut down the last sawmill in the town, which it had taken over in 1965. In 1992 the production of wood pulp (according to the Schliff process, Swedish träsliperi ) was discontinued.
As a result of the decline of local industry, Bureå is now primarily a residence for commuters who work in Skellefteå .
