history

Holmen Paper's headquarters in Norrköping

The company has its origins in several small companies that sprang up in different parts of Sweden: this was an arms factory that was founded by Duke Johann von Östergötland in 1609 on the island of Kvarnholmen ( Mill Island ) in Norrköping . The current company name Holmen is derived from this.

The current company was founded in 1875 and (as of 2015) is headed by Henrik Sjölund. It employs approximately 4,870 people (2005). In 1998 the companies MoDo, Holmens Bruk and Iggesunds Bruk merged to Mo och Domsjö AB, but the name was changed to Holmen AB a little later in February 2000 after the sale of Domsjö Fabriker (MoDo headquarters) . The largest owner of Holmen is the investment company LE Lundbergsföretagen of billionaire Fredrik Lundberg. The company holds 32.9% of the shares and 61.6% of the voting rights.
