AB Iggesunds Bruk was a Swedish wood and steel company that existed from 1685 to 1988. Initially a mining company , the group was later expanded to include sawmills , electricity production , the chemical industry , and cardboard and paper production . After the Second World War , the company focused on the wood industry. When Mo och Domsjö AB ( MoDo ) took over the majority of the shares in 1983, the last subsidiary in steel production, Boxholms AB , was wound up. In 1988 Iggesunds Bruk was completely merged with MoDo together with Holmens Bruk . The group has been called Holmen AB since 2000 .

history

In 1685, the merchant Isak Breant the Elder. Ä. an ironworks on Iggesundsån . The iron ore came from the Dannemora mine and the island of Utö . In 1721 Iggesund was burned down by the Russian army in the Great Northern War , after which the trading house Grill bought the plant and ran it in its most successful era. In 1800 the work was sold to Jürgen Christopher Müller, and it changed hands several times in the 19th century.

In 1870 a larger sawmill was built in Iggesund, marking the start of the company's sawmill era. The ironworks was greatly expanded in the 1870s. In 1903 Iggesunds Bruk was bought by Hudiksvalls Trävaru AB , in the course of which the company became more focused on the timber industry. Between 1915 and 1917 Sweden’s first combined sulphate and sulphite factory was built in Iggesund.

In the interwar period six sawmills and one ironworks were shut down, iron production finally ended with the shutdown of the Iggesund ironworks in 1953. In 1951 the chemical company EKA was bought, in 1965 Boxholms AB, a conglomerate that included iron and sawmills, the furniture industry and dairies. Cardboard production (now part of Iggesund Paperboard , a subsidiary of Holmen) began in 1963.

In the early 1980s began MoDo through share purchases ever larger shares in Iggesund to acquire, 1983 Iggesund was a MoDo - associate . In 1988 Iggesunds Bruk, Holmens Bruk and MoDo were merged. In addition to Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget and Stora Enso, a third large Swedish timber company was created.
