Therese Sjögran (born April 8, 1977 in Södra Sandby ) is a former Swedish football player . With 214 internationals, she is the current record national player in her country and, together with the German Birgit Prinz, European record national player .
Career
societies
Sjögran started playing football at Harlösa IF at the age of six . As a twelve-year-old she joined Verberöds AIF , for which she later competed in Division 2 . In 1997 she moved to Wä IF in Damallsvenskan and made her debut for the Swedish national team that same year . In 2001 she moved to league competitor Malmö FF Dam , to which she remained loyal even after the name was changed to LdB FC in 2007. After a detour to Sky Blue FC in the USA, she returned to Malmö in 2011.
National team
Sjögran made his debut on October 30, 1997 in the 1: 3 against the USA in the national team. In 2001 Sjögran took part with the national team at the European Championship in Germany and won the silver medal after losing a final after a golden goal against Germany . Two years later she also won the silver medal at the World Cup in the USA - again after a final defeat after a Golden Goal against Germany. She was also used in the final when she came on for Malin Andersson in the 53rd minute . At the 2004 Summer Olympics , she took the ungrateful fourth place with the national selection. At the European Championships in 2005 she was in the squad when the Swedish team failed in the semifinals. She was also part of the team at the 2007 World Cup , but the team was eliminated in the preliminary round.
In 2007, Sjögran, the successor to Lotta Schelin, was named Sweden's football player of the year with the diamond ball . Three years later she received the award again.
On March 7, 2011, she set with her 166th international match the record of Victoria Sandell Svensson and increased it on March 9 to 167 games. For the 2011 World Cup she was nominated as the oldest player in the squad . She was used in all three group matches and reached the quarter-finals unbeaten with Sweden, in which she met Australia . There she scored the 1-0 opening goal in the 11th minute of the game and in the 16th minute gave Lisa Dahlkvist the template to make it 2-0 . With the 3-1 victory both the semi-finals against Japan and the qualification for the Olympic Games in London were reached . In the semifinals she made her 175th international match. Sweden took the lead 1-0 after 10 minutes, but three goals by the Japanese prevented the second final from 2003. On July 16, 2011, she and the team won the game for third place in a 2-1 victory over France .
Due to a cruciate ligament injury that she sustained in training in late May 2012, she was unable to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games . After her recovery, she was one of the regular players in the 2013 season , but by the end of June she was only in one of her eleven league appearances in the starting line-up. Nevertheless, she surprisingly nominated national coach Pia Sundhage for the 2013 European Championship finals . In the friendly against England on July 4, 2013, she came on as a substitute in the second half, making her 183rd international appearance. At the European Championship finals, she came on for the first time in the third group game in the second half and in the 47th minute one of her crosses led to an own goal by the Italian defender Raffaella Manieri , which gave Sweden a 1-0 lead (final score 3: 1) . In the semifinals against Germany she was used again in the second half, but could not turn the game around, so the Swedish team lost another knockout game against Germany and was eliminated.
On October 29, 2014, she made her 200th international match in a 2-1 draw against Germany as the first Swedish and third European player.
In May 2015 she was nominated as the oldest Swedish player for the 2015 World Cup. She was the first Swede to take part in a World Cup finals for the fourth time. On April 28, 2015, she announced that she would end her career after the World Cup. With her first appearance at the World Cup, she was the only World Cup record player for the Swedish team with 15 appearances and then increased it to 18 games. In the round of 16 against Germany, she made her 214th international match at 1: 4, setting the European record for German Birgit Prinz , who has not been active since the 2011 World Cup.
After the end of her career, Sjögran took over the position of sports director in Rosengård.
