Boyd scored all five goals in a 5-2 win against Dundee United in September 2005 and this Scottish Premier League record brought him to the attention of English clubs. However, the Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday offers were turned down and Boyd stayed with Kilmarnock.

He scored a total of 20 goals in the 17 league games in the second half of the season. Since he previously scored 17 goals for Kilmarnock, Boyd was top scorer with a total of 37, the first player to do so with two clubs.

In the following seasons Boyd was one of the top scorer in the league. In the 2008/2009 season, the Rangers striker secured the title of top scorer again with 27 goals in 35 games (rate: 0.77 goals / game).

On December 30, 2009 Boyd scored five goals for the second time in a game against Dundee United (final score 7-1 for the Rangers).

In the 2009/2010 season Boyd was the league's top scorer with 26 goals. On May 28, 2010, the Rangers announced that he would not renew his expiring contract.

On July 5, 2010 he signed with the English second division club Middlesbrough FC . During the season he moved on March 8, 2011 on loan to league rivals Nottingham Forest , who were also starting in the Football League Championship 2010/11 , and scored six goals in ten league games by the end of the season.

From the 2011/12 season Boyd played for the Turkish first division club Eskişehirspor . He signed a three-year contract on July 8, 2011. This was ended by Boyd on December 19, 2011, as he said he was never paid. In total, he was only 76 minutes on the pitch for Eskişehirspor.

His decision came after the World Cup qualifier against Norway. He was put on the bench and newcomer Chris Iwelumo played instead . After the game, the coach stated that Kris had not shown enough performance with the Rangers. After hearing the comment, Boyd contacted Burley and Gordon Smith, the Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association, and announced that he was retiring from the national team. At a press conference, Burley hinted that the door to the national team is not completely closed for Boyd. It would be his decision, but he could come back anytime.
