Joseph Leonard "Joey" MacDonald (born February 7, 1980 in Pictou , Nova Scotia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper , who was most recently under contract with the Schwenninger Wild Wings in the German ice hockey league . Before that, he played in the National Hockey League for several years .

Career

Joey MacDonald began his career in 1997 in the Canadian Junior League QMJHL with the Halifax Mooseheads . After a year he moved to the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League , a junior league that also belongs to the Canadian Hockey League like the QMJHL . In the summer of 2001, MacDonald had to leave the team because he was now too old to play in a youth league.

He had not been drafted by any team in the National Hockey League , but was signed by the Detroit Red Wings in January 2002 and completed the remainder of the season in the East Coast Hockey League with the Toledo Storm , a then farm team of the Red Wings. In the summer of 2002 he was brought to the Grand Rapids Griffins , another farm team, in the American Hockey League to work there as Marc Lamothe's back-up goalkeeper . Both received the award for the fewest goals against in the AHL at the end of the season. In the 2003/04 season , both shared the position as number 1 and the following year MacDonald was sole goalkeeper. In this season he achieved a personal best with 34 wins.

In 2005/06, MacDonald formed a goalkeeper trio with Jimmy Howard and Drew MacIntyre that split the ice age in the AHL season.

In the fall of 2006 MacDonald was included in the NHL squad of the Detroit Red Wings, where he is to act as the back-up goalie of Dominik Hašek and Chris Osgood . On October 19, 2006 he came for the first time in the NHL. In the game against the San Jose Sharks , the Red Wings had already conceded three goals after 15 minutes, whereupon MacDonald was substituted on for Osgood. But he could no longer influence the game decisively. In the end the game was lost 5-1 and MacDonald conceded two more goals in 15 shots in his 45 minutes of ice time. On November 18, 2006 against the Edmonton Oilers , MacDonald was on the ice for the first time for the Red Wings from the start. The game was lost 3: 4 after a penalty shootout. MacDonald saved 18 of 21 shots in 65 minutes. MacDonald came to other missions and benefited from an injury to Chris Osgood. In late February 2007 he was put on the waiver list and shortly afterwards signed by Boston Bruins .

In the summer of 2007 he signed a contract with the New York Islanders as a free agent , but was not given a place in the NHL squad and played most of the 2007/08 season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , the AHL farm team of the Islanders. He performed well in the AHL, but only won 13 of his 32 games. When the starting goalkeeper of the Islanders, Rick DiPietro , was sidelined in March 2008 due to hip replacement, MacDonald was called to the NHL squad.

For the 2008/09 season he finally made the final jump to the NHL team as a substitute goalkeeper behind DiPietro. After DiPietro had to undergo knee surgery in November 2008 and was therefore out for almost the entire rest of the season, MacDonald took over the post of goalkeeper for the Islanders.

Before the following season , MacDonald was committed by the Toronto Maple Leafs , who used him mainly with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL, so that he only completed six NHL games. In March 2010 he was exchanged by the Leafs for a draft pick from the Anaheim Ducks , but stayed with the Marlies. In the summer of 2010 he was signed by his former team, the Red Wings from Detroit, for a year, who used him again as the goalkeeper of the Grand Rapids Griffins.

In February 2013, MacDonald , who was on the waiver list, was selected by the Calgary Flames . There he could not prevail in the NHL squad and was transferred to the AHL farm team, the Abbotsford Heat , in November 2013 . Even after his move to the Montreal Canadiens organization , the goalie was only used in the AHL, with the Hamilton Bulldogs .

For the 2015/16 season he decided to move to Europe to the Schwenninger Wild Wings from the German Ice Hockey League and ended his career after the 2016/2017 season. However, he did not return to Canada, but moved his center of life to Tuningen in the Black Forest .
