Adam James Armstrong (born February 10, 1997 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is an English football player .

He comes from the youth of Newcastle United , where he was denied the breakthrough with the professionals. After three loan deals of varying success, he switched to Blackburn Rovers on loan in January 2018 , where he has been under contract since August 2018.

The offensive variably deployable Armstrong played for various England youth teams and won this time with the U17 , the U17 European Championship in 2014 and the U21 , the U20 World Cup 2017 .

Club career

Newcastle United

As a lifelong supporter, Adam Armstrong, born in Newcastle upon Tyne , joined the offspring of Newcastle United at the age of nine and grew up there in various age groups to become one of the most talented strikers of the year. In the 2013/14 season he played for the U23 team for the first time and managed to be recommended for the first team, where he was listed in the matchday squad for the first time in spring 2014. He made his Premier League debut on March 15, 2014 (30th matchday) in the 0-1 away defeat by Fulham , when he came on in the 85th minute for Luuk de Jong . At the age of 17 he became the youngest player to play for Newcastle in the Premier League after Kazenga LuaLua . In the remaining 2013/14 season he came to three more short appearances in the top English division. In the next season 2014/15 he was used in 15 league games of the men's team, while he also scored eleven goals in 14 league games of the U23.

Loan to Coventry City

On July 28, 2015 Armstrong moved to third division Coventry City on loan for six months . In his debut on August 8, 2015 (1st matchday), he shot his team to a 2-0 home win against relegated Wigan Athletic . He made the perfect start for himself and the Sky Blues with another brace in the 4-0 away win in the next league game against Millwall and a goal in the 3-2 home win against Crewe Alexandra . Armstrong was ultimately named August Player of the Month for his impressive performance. He was unable to maintain this goal quota in the next league games of the 2015/16 season , but still managed to convince and was an undisputed regular under head coach Tony Mowbray . On January 2, 2016 (25th matchday), he scored the first hat trick of his professional career in a 5-0 away win against Crewe Alexandra . On January 14, 2016, the loan business was extended until the end of the season. In April 2016, he made it into the League One PFA Team of the Year . Armstrong returned to Newcastle with 20 goals and five assists, which he achieved in 40 league games, which had to accept relegation to the EFL Championship .

Loan to Barnsley FC

Armstrong played two league games at Newcastle United in the next 2016/17 season , but switched to league rivals FC Barnsley on August 30, 2016 in a six-month loan deal . Previously, he signed a new four-year contract with the Magpies and their head coach Rafa Benítez justified the loan with a greater chance of regular playing time at Barnsley, which he did not have with his ambitious club. At Barnsley, he made his debut on September 10, 2016 (6th matchday) against Preston North End , when he came on for Ryan Kent in the 62nd minute and scored the winning goal for a 2-1 away win around a quarter of an hour. With the Tykes , he quickly established himself in the starting line-up, but scored only a few goals, which is why he was hardly considered, especially in December 2016. Nevertheless, the loan business was extended to the end of the season at the beginning of January 2017. In the second half of the season he developed again as a regular regular, but still rarely scored. Armstrong left South Yorkshire after 36 league appearances in which he could only score six goals.

On loan to the Bolton Wanderers

On July 17, 2017, Adam Armstrong moved on loan for six months to the Bolton Wanderers in the second highest English division. He made his debut on August 6, 2017 (1st matchday) in a 3-2 home defeat by Leeds United when he came on for Stephen Darby in the 84th minute . Armstrong was a regular at the Trotters , but had a very poor start to the season with the club, with the club having two points and only three goals after 11 matchdays. In the next league games Bolton managed to increase points, with Armstrong being used for the first time in the position of the left winger . His first goal of the season was not achieved until November 4, 2017 (matchday 16) in a 2-1 home win against Norwich City . This remained his only goal for Bolton and he left the relegation-threatened club in early January 2018 after 20 league appearances.

Blackburn Rovers

After two unsuccessful loans, Armstrong moved back to the third- tier EFL League One on January 9, 2018 , where he joined the former top club Blackburn Rovers on loan for the remainder of the 2017/18 season. There he met Tony Mowbray again, who had coached him in his best season at Coventry City. He made his debut on January 13, 2018 in a 3-1 home win over Shrewsbury Town when he came on for Craig Conway in the 62nd minute of the game . At the Rovers, he quickly established himself as a regular on the wing and fought with the club for promotion to the championship. On February 10, 2018 (32nd matchday), he scored his first goal in a 2-2 draw against Oldham Athletic . Three days later he shot Blackburn with a brace for a 2-1 away win over Portsmouth FC . With nine goals in 21 league appearances Armstrong contributed significantly to the rise of the team and then returned to Newcastle United.

On August 6, 2018, Adam Armstrong moved permanently to Blackburn Rovers, where he signed a four-year contract. On the transfer fee was agreed remain silent, but media they estimated at 1.75 million pounds sterling . He started the 2018/19 season as a striker, but switched back to the wing after a short time. In January 2019, regular Armstrong, who had previously only scored two goals, had his best month of the season. He achieved two goals and four assists in four league games, all of which could be won. These strong performances earned him the January Player of the Month award. Armstrong ended the season with nine goals and just as many assists, which he achieved in 48 competitive games.

In the next 2019/20 season , he improved his goal rate significantly and took up the fight with the Rovers for a place in the promotion play-offs.

National team

Between February and April 2013, Adam Armstrong played six international matches for the England U16 national team , in which he scored two goals. He has been working for the U17s since August 2013 and took part in the 2014 U17 European Championship in Malta with this selection . At this tournament he scored two goals in the group stage and made it to the final against the Netherlands with England . But he missed the final win due to an injury. Then he was no longer in action for the U17, for which he scored a total of 10 goals in 12 international matches. From September 2014 to June 2015, he scored seven goals in eight U18 games . He then played in 10 international matches for the U19s , in which he scored three goals.

Armstrong made his U20 debut in September 2016 . With this selection he took part in the 2017 U21 World Cup in South Korea . He scored in the 3-0 win against Argentina in the first group game. In total, he played four games in this competition and won the World Cup with this selection. In the final against Venezuela, however, he was not taken into account. For the U20 he played a total of 13 international matches, in which he scored seven goals. In May and June 2018, he made five appearances for the U21s when he won the Toulon tournament , in which he scored a goal.
