Marwin Hitz (born September 18, 1987 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss football goalkeeper . He has been under contract with Borussia Dortmund since the 2018/19 season and was part of the Swiss national football team from 2014–2018 .

youth

Hitz grew up in Freidorf TG near Arbon near St. Gallen and was discovered at the age of nine at a Grümpel tournament by FC St. Gallen . After his commitment, he was under contract with FC St. Gallen for twelve years.

Career

Hitz rose to the U21 team in the first division at FC St. Gallen . After the 2006/07 season he was loaned to the second division club Yverdon-Sport FC and, during the winter break, to the league rivals FC Winterthur . On matchday 25, after an injury to Christian Leite , he made his first professional appearance after half-time and then completed the remaining nine Challenge League matches. In the following season, too, Hitz was in goal for the Winterthur team from the start, before he was sent off the field after an emergency brake on matchday five . A few days later he was signed by the German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg as the third goalkeeper of the first division squad.

In his first year he was not used for the VfL professionals and only played a few times for the second team in the Regionalliga Nord . In the 2009/10 season he was the goalkeeper there and played 29 games this season. After a red ban and later due to a longer injury break of the first goalkeeper, his Swiss compatriot Diego Benaglio , he moved up to the professionals. When number two André Lenz went into the game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in poor health and had scored an own goal, Hitz gave up on February 18, 2010 in the Europa League game against FC Villarreal and a few days later in the game against FC Schalke 04 made his club or Bundesliga debut. He played five first division games until Benaglio returned and in the coming season he remained the first choice to represent his compatriot in goal.

After his contract expired in 2013, he left the club and switched to league rivals FC Augsburg for the 2013/14 season . On February 21, 2015, the 22nd matchday of the 2014/15 season , Hitz scored the 2-2 goal against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in stoppage time. After Jens Lehmann and Frank Rost, he is the third goalkeeper in the Bundesliga to score a goal from the game. This goal was voted goal of the month . This season, Hitz qualified with FC Augsburg for the UEFA Europa League , in which they reached the round of 32 and were narrowly eliminated from the eventual finalists Liverpool FC (0: 0/0: 1). Across all competitions, the Swiss stood between the posts 157 times for the Fuggerstadt team.

For the 2018/19 season, after his contract expired, Hitz moved to league rivals Borussia Dortmund , where he signed a contract that was valid until June 2021. After playing for the first time in a competitive game for his new team against 1. FC Union Berlin in the DFB Cup on October 31, 2018 , Hitz made his debut on November 10, 2018 for the injured number 1, his compatriot Roman Bürki , against FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga for BVB. In August 2019, Hitz won his first title with the club while standing between the posts when the double winner of the previous season, FC Bayern, was defeated 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . As a result, he represented the injured Bürki in four Bundesliga games (including three to zero) and was allowed to play all games in the cup until they were eliminated in the second round.

National team

Hitz was a Swiss youth national player and most recently played as number 1 in the U20 national team . On August 29, 2014, he was appointed to the senior national team for the first time and was in the squad for the European Championship qualifier against England on September 8, 2014 , but was not used. On June 10, 2015, he made his debut in a 3-0 win over Liechtenstein .

In qualifying for the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he played his first competitive game against Estonia in the last group game, which, however, was no longer important. He was then accepted as the second substitute goalkeeper in Switzerland 's EM squad , but was not used.
