Club career

Beginnings

Donis Avdijaj was born to Kosovar Albanian parents in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony . At the age of five he started playing football at SV Atter, a sports club in the Atter district of Osnabrück . After five years at SV Atter, he moved to the youth department of VfL Osnabrück . In 2011 he moved to the youth performance center of FC Schalke 04 .

FC Schalke 04

For Schalke's U17s, he scored 15 goals in 26 games and put on another one. In the next season he improved his scoring significantly and at the end of the season had 44 goals on account after 25 league games, plus 13 assists . The record lasted until the end of the 2018/19 season , at the end of which the then 14-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko scored 46 goals. For a short time he was part of the U19 squad, with which he won the 2012/13 Westphalia Cup. Avdijaj scored the 1-0 winner in the final against Borussia Dortmund's U19s .

In the 2014/15 season Avdijaj was a regular part of the professional team and took part in professional training. In the first group game of the Champions League - 2014/15 season away from FC Chelsea , he was in the Schalke squad, but was not used. He was also part of the second team at Schalke 04 and made eleven appearances in the Regionalliga West and scored four goals.

SK Sturm Graz

On January 13, 2015 Avdijaj was loaned to the Austrian Bundesliga club SK Sturm Graz until the end of June 2016 at the latest. There he made his professional debut in a 3: 3 game against SC Wiener Neustadt on February 21, 2015, the 21st matchday of the Bundesliga , when he came on for Bright Edomwonyi in the 81st minute . Only a few minutes later he prepared the goal to make Martin Ehrenreich 3-2 . He scored his first goal on matchday 26 in the game against Admira Wacker to make it 2-0, the game ended 3-1. At the end of the season he had scored six goals in 17 league games and prepared three more.

Avdijaj also played the 2015/16 season at Sturm Graz, although Schalke had the option to bring Avdijaj back early. In the Europa League , Sturm Graz was eliminated in the third qualifying round against Rubin Kazan . Avdijaj scored a goal in the first leg, but received a yellow-red card and was suspended for the second leg. After two draws at the start of the league, the games on the 3rd and 4th matchday were won. In the win against Wolfsberger AC on matchday 4, Avdijaj scored a goal, on the following matchday against Rapid Vienna as well. He then stayed eight game days without a league goal, but prepared three goals. In contrast to the previous season, Avdijaj acted more in midfield than in the storm. From mid-October 2015, he was out for several months due to thigh and hip problems. He only made his comeback at the end of February in a 1-0 win against SV Ried . He played a total of 25 league games in which he scored three goals and gave seven assists. In the ÖFB Cup , Avdijaj played two games in which he scored three goals and prepared one.

FC Schalke 04

After the loan expired, Avdijaj returned to FC Schalke 04 for the 2016/17 season . There he got the shirt with the number 33 on his back. During the trip to China as part of the preparation for the season and the promotion of FC Schalke 04 in China, he injured the meniscus of his right knee in early July 2016 and had to leave. Avdijaj played his first competitive game of the 2016/17 season on November 24, 2016, in the fifth group game of the Europa League in the home game against OGC Nice . Schalke 04 won 2-0. He scored his first Bundesliga goal for Schalke on December 20, 2016, the 16th matchday, in a 2-1 defeat against Hamburger SV .

After preparing for the 2017/18 season , Avdijaj was no longer considered by the new coach Domenico Tedesco and, after no club wanted to sign him, he was sent to the Schalke U23 team.

Roda Kerkrade and Willem II Tilburg

On January 15, 2018, it was awarded to the Dutch first division club Roda JC Kerkrade . In eleven league appearances he scored three goals.

In preparation for the summer of 2018, Avdijaj initially returned to FC Schalke 04 and was part of the squad of the second team that competed in the fifth-class Oberliga Westfalen . His contract at Schalke 04 ran until 2019 and contained a release clause of 49 million euros.

On August 16, 2018, Avdijaj returned to the Eredivisie and joined Willem II Tilburg . He signed a contract that ran until the end of the 2018/19 season , which was terminated in March 2019 due to several cases of Avdijaj's indiscipline.

Trabzonspor

In July 2019, Avdijaj joined the Turkish first division club  Trabzonspor after four months of non-membership . In Trabzon he signed a one-year contract with an option for three more years. He made his league debut on August 25, 2018, the second match day of the 2019/20 season , when he came on as a substitute in the 2-1 win against Yeni Malatyaspor shortly before the end. On the fifth matchday he scored his first league goal for Trabzonspor against Sivasspor . His contract was terminated on January 17, 2020. In 18 games for Trabzonspor in all competitions, Avdijaj scored one goal and two assists.

Heart of Midlothian

On January 20, 2020, he signed a contract until the end of the 2019/20 season with the Scottish first division club Heart of Midlothian , who is coached by the German Daniel Stendel . In June 2020 he left the club again.

National team

Germany

Avdijaj scored two goals in two games for the U-16 national team . At the age of 16 he was considered for the U-17 national team . With this he was eliminated in the qualifying round for the U-17 European Championship 2013 in Slovakia .

On September 5, 2014, he made his first game for the U19 against the Netherlands .

In mid-October 2014 he announced that he wanted to play for the Albanian national football team in the future on the grounds that he would rather have his people behind him than a foreign one. It is his "definitive decision" to play for Albania. Only one month later, the decision was revised and postponed by a change of adviser.

Kosovo

He was nominated for the Kosovar football team for a friendly against Werder Bremen on March 24, 2015 . Since it was a friendly game - not a game between two nations - and Kosovo was not recognized by FIFA or UEFA as a full member of their organization at the time of the game , Avdijaj could continue to play for both Kosovo and for Albania and Germany emerge.

Avdijaj made his debut for Kosovo on March 24, 2017 when he came on for the injured Fanol Përdedaj in the 74th minute of the World Cup qualifier against Iceland . Kosovo lost 1: 2 to the Icelanders.

Style of play

Avdijaj plays around Daniel Toth and Eldis Bajrami

Avdijaj is considered a fast, technically well-trained player. He acts with both feet and, in addition to his regular position as a hanging tip, can also play on the wings or in the attacking midfield . In addition, he is considered a good preparer and is dangerous for goals. His particular strengths are his dribbling and one-on-one.
