Karl Retzlaff

Karl Retzlaff , b. Dietz (born May 7, 1890 in Gießen ; † April 23, 1967 in Großhansdorf ) was a German police officer, most recently lieutenant general of the police and SS group leader in World War II .

Life

Karl Dietz was the son of the doctor Johann Dietz; after the early death of his father, his mother married the businessman Max Retzlaff, who adopted Karl. Dietz finished his school career in March 1910 with the final examination at the Wilhelm-Gymnasium (Hamburg) . He then began to study law at the Hessian Ludwig University . In 1910 he became active in the Corps Hassia Gießen . As an inactive , he moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Philipps University in Marburg . In September 1913 he joined the field artillery regiment "Generalfeldmarschall Graf Waldersee" (Schleswigsches) No. 9 , with whom he took part in the First World War , most recently as a first lieutenant . After the end of the war he was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein Freikorps .

With the rank of lieutenant police officer he entered the service of the Hamburg police , in which he worked for the order police, among other things, as a hundred commander . In the meantime, he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD . A member of the Kyffhäuserbund since 1920, he was a member of the Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten, from February 1933 for almost six months . From the beginning of September 1934 to the end of March 1937 he was chief of staff at the command of the Hamburg police force and from the beginning of December 1935 to the end of August 1936 initially deputy commander of the Hamburg police force. At the beginning of April 1937 he was commander of the protection police in Hamburg and from there moved to Vienna in the same function at the beginning of June 1939 . In mid-November 1937 he joined the NSDAP ( membership number 4.349.909) and the SS at the beginning of August 1939 (SS number 337.770). In November 1939 he became inspector of the Ordnungspolizei (ITE) in Military District XVII with headquarters in Vienna. From the beginning of September 1943 to January 1945 he was in command of the Ordnungspolizei (BdO) in Hamburg and in this function was subordinate to the Higher SS and Police Leader Georg-Henning Graf von Bassewitz-Behr . As an SS leader he was on the staff of the North Sea (Hamburg) section.

After the end of the war he was automatically arrested until mid-May 1947 . After his release he lived in Hamburg-Wandsbek . Since May 1921 he was with Erna, geb. Pulfrich (* 1897) married. The couple had a daughter.
