The Mercedes-Benz R 231 is a roadster from the German car manufacturer Daimler . It represents the sixth generation of the SL and replaces the predecessor R 230 , which had been in production for eleven years . It was produced in the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen . The vehicle was first presented to the world on December 15, 2011. It celebrated its official world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in January 2012 and entered the European market on March 31, 2012. The base price for the SL 350 was 93,534 euros when it was launched .

Rear view

In contrast to the previous model changes of the SL , the replacement of the R 230 by the R 231 did not involve any such radical changes as, for example, when the R 230 appeared in 2001. The classic proportions of a roadster, which make up a long bonnet and a short rear end, were also retained in the seventh generation. At the front, the radiator grille, which is no longer optically integrated into the bonnet, but designed separately, is now upright. The Mercedes-Benz brand logo is integrated into the radiator grille with just one central strut. Compared to its predecessor, the headlights were placed further out, but kept their inclined position. The daytime running lights in the form of LED daytime running light strips are now also located in the outer areas of the bumper on the R 231 . The sideline only rises slightly towards the rear. The side air inlet on the fender has been enlarged slightly compared to the previous model. The stern has been changed less. The LED rear lights have been enlarged slightly and their upper end now protrudes further into the side. In contrast to its predecessors, the rear-view mirrors with integrated indicators are located on the door flanks, as in the CLS .

interior

Instrument panel and steering wheel of the R 231

The interior of the roadster has a leather-covered three-spoke steering wheel with aluminum double struts. The instrument cluster is also new, and although it still has two clearly drawn, analog round instruments, each with an additional small round instrument, there is now an 11.4 cm multifunction display between them. A large decorative element is now attached to the instrument panel, which is intended to increase the quality. The central display of the navigation system with a diagonal of 17.8 cm, which is located between two ventilation nozzles in cross design made of aluminum, which borrows from the SLS AMG , is now integrated into the upper part of the instrument panel. Below the screen there is a control unit that flows up to the armrest and consists of two separate compartments; starting at the top with the operation of the radio and the navigation system and below the climate control. The control buttons are made of aluminum. The radio and navigation system are operated using a rotary and push button located in front of the center armrest. Next to it is the now much smaller automatic selector lever.

In addition, matt black forged 10-spoke forged wheels or various add-on parts up to the black chrome-plated AMG sports exhaust system set accents.

Grand Edition special model

The special “Grand Edition” model was presented at the 89th Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.

Innovations

Frontbass system

In the R 231 , a new speaker architecture finds its origin. The cavities of the aluminum construction on the side member are used as a resonance space for amplifiers and sound bodies, which should lead to an improved sound. Due to the changed arrangement, there are now more storage options in the door instead of the woofers.

Magic Sky Control

After the SLK ( R 172 ), the Magic Sky Control mentioned by Mercedes-Benz will also be available in the R 231 . This is a switchable glass roof that originated in the Maybach . The difference to normal glass roofs is that the Magic Sky Control keeps the heat and rays of the sun out of the interior; it can also be darkened or lightened in a variable manner. When the mode is switched on, the temperature on interior parts such as armrests is up to 10 degrees Celsius below the values with conventional green glass. The roof works through the physics of a plate capacitor: If an electrical voltage is applied to the glass structure, particles in the glass structure align themselves so that light can penetrate the pane. If, however, the voltage remains switched off, the particles remain randomly aligned. This partially blocks the light and the lens stays dark. Accordingly, the interior heats up less and the air conditioning is relieved when the roof is switched to dark.

Hold

In the "R231", as with the previous model "R230", there is the possibility of reaching the trunk more easily with the top down by lifting the roof in the rear at the push of a button. Here, when the tailgate is open, the convertible top folds up, providing a larger opening to the cargo area.

transmission

All models are either equipped with a 7-speed converter automatic transmission (7G-TRONIC Plus) or a 9-speed automatic transmission. An automatic start-stop system is standard. A distinction is made between two types of transmission in the AMG models: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission is installed in the SL 63 AMG , in which the conventional torque converter has been replaced by a wet start-up clutch running in an oil bath. Thanks to its low rotational inertia, the gearbox acts extremely spontaneously, dynamically and without the losses that are typical of converters. When the SL 65 AMG , the transmission is AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic use. A large spread ensures a significantly lower speed level. It is designed for maximum shift comfort, but also guarantees a sporty, agile gear change. A new fuel economy converter, bearings with reduced friction and the transmission oil heat management increase the efficiency of the power transmission even more.

steering

All models in the R 231 series have electromechanical direct steering with speed-dependent power steering, also known as parameter steering, which is installed as standard in higher-priced Mercedes models. The ratio changes over the entire steering wheel angle. As the steering wheel turns, the translation becomes more direct, reducing the steering wheel movements when parking or driving through a roundabout. The turning circle is around eleven meters.

landing gear

A chassis with an adaptive damping system is used as standard on the R 231 . This adapts the damping force of each individual wheel to the road conditions and driving style. These adjustments take place within a stepless damping map. The basic setting of the damping system - sportily firm or comfortably soft - can be determined by the driver. The Active Body Control active suspension system is also available on request . This is an electro-hydraulically controlled active chassis based on steel springs, which is intended to compensate for rolling and pitching movements.

Brakes

Composite braking system

The R 231 has four-piston fixed caliper brakes in aluminum monoblock design at the front and single-piston combination sliding calipers made of aluminum at the rear. The disc brakes are internally ventilated all around and additionally perforated on the front axle. The SL 350 has brake discs with a diameter of 342 mm at the front and 320 mm at the rear. The SL 500 uses 360 mm brake discs at the front and 320 mm at the rear. In the SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG , a high-performance composite brake system with 390 mm composite discs with six-piston fixed calipers is used on the front axle, while on the rear axle there are instead 360 mm integral discs with single-piston floating calipers. The ceramic high-performance composite brake system from the SLS AMG is also available on request for these two models .

body

When developing the R 231, Mercedes-Benz set itself the goal of significantly reducing weight. For the first time, a body-in-white made almost entirely of aluminum is used in the SL . Due to the high proportion of light metal, its weight has been reduced by around 110 kg to 254 kg compared to the previous model. Furthermore, the stiffness of the vehicle is increased through the use of aluminum. Exceptions are the roof frame around the windshield, which is still made of steel, and the trunk lid, which is made of a mixture of plastic and steel. These measures enabled the total weight of the finished vehicle to be reduced by up to 140 kg.

By optimizing the body design, the drag coefficient could also be reduced. The SL 350 value = 0.27, making it the most aerodynamically efficient roadster of its time.

Overall, the R 231 grew in all dimensions. In terms of overall length, the roadster grew by 5.5 cm to 4.62 m compared to the previous model, and the wheelbase was increased by 1.5 cm to 2.59 m. Both the front and rear overhangs have been increased by around 1.3 cm. The width of the R 231 increased by 5.7 cm to around 1.88 m. If the side mirrors are included in these calculations, the vehicle widened to 2.10 m (+ 3 cm). This also made the interior larger. Overall, the interior widened by 2.8 cm.

The fully electric vario-roof of the R 231 opens and closes in a little less than 20 seconds. When the top is closed, the trunk volume is 381 liters; if this is opened, 241 liters are available.
